was only joking if u have some get some mild steel plate about half inch thick drill some 1/8 pilot holes through. then drill a series of 3/8 th holes with cutting compound keep a good pressure on the drill at slow speed .after about 10 holes if the drills still sharp its good quality .if the swarf is coming of blue and burnt and the drill is blunt its crap

My youngest used to work for them. He was made redundant a few years ago. He got me one of the last sets made in Sheffield. I have to say they are brilliant. Its really surprisng how much better they are than the usual run of the mill stuff from Wickes or B&Q.
Agree with you there Al. You don't realise until you try one up against the other.
The bits I got with my drill didn't have anything smaller than a 6.5, didn't think it was a problem as I have a case full of 'standard' bits. They're all in the bin now as I've seen how **** they are!

Had quite a few Dormer and Presto drills, seem to be getting worse. Started buying Osborn ones, marked as made in Sheffield, and are very good. Stay sharp for a long time, even when repeatedly drilling through red hot welds.

Well I tried the brazilian dormers and they seem good. I've not given them much hammer, and to be honest as a domestic hobbyist they won't get the same clout as you lads would give em.
I'm happy enough with them especially for the price but I will keep an eye out for Osborn's in the future

Aye, can see the time coming when you won't be able to buy decent quality at any price
Anything cutting tool related that's old and from Sheffield is worth a punt - too much competition at the time for anyone to make total cr*p.PS- Re-worked LOADs of old Osborne stuff - top quality gear - one duffer in 30years aint bad

I was told by a friend that works for Dormer they are now made in China, I can believe it as the drills i'm buying now are nowhere near as good as the ones i bought when i was an apprentice.
I still have both sets of Dormers i bought then, the small ones have been changed but the ones over 5/16 are the originals, they are just a bit shorter these days
