i noticed your post ly it was it i was replying to, yet more info,i didn,t know esab made murex.its only my preference but of all the 6013 i have tried vodex is the best for root.snowy they are 7018,the wee man loves them.up until about 4 or 5 years ago our staple was a 6013 called afrox, they had calor on the box and i think i read s.africa once,they had a beautiful finish. at the time there was a lot of moaning, but you won,t go far wrong with bolher. sorry but they also had 2 paint marks on the shank ,blue and red. f/j

Oh yer, Vodex 450mm, used boxes of them in the past, Fincord Ms were also a popular 6013, for me anyway.....

The guys I deal with now are ESAB, or Bohler, so hence the recent'ish change...as I said I ran Lincoln white boxed, BOCs for about 4 years thought they were cracking rods...But I guess china were the cheeper supplier....

Did get some lincoln 6010s Cells the other day, stoveing a flange on the outside of a tank, your domain really F/J....

I used to sell em...cracking rod! Afrox stands for African Oxygen, part of the BOC Gases group. All the gas equipment in BOC cylinder centres is now made in South Africa by Afrox

al you want locking up for that one i have just read again your last reply to this thread, and i can honestly say it is the most educated answer i have read on any site i have visited, i don,t mean to this question. snowy i wish i could discuss stoving but it just isn,t my game. i had a go with the 7018s as i know i will be expected to use them on site i did this root filler and cap but on the steam line it will be tig root . f/j

They seem to be the same white box rods as previously purchaed by a few of you £10.95 + vat for 2.5mm called WELDLINE on the invoice .
Not at all bad and didnt fancy paying £20 for premium electrodes ..

So is anyone any the wiser as to who makes them ?

I had a couple of packs of those - came with a 2nd hand inverter I bought last year. Dutch I think? They are good enough - i've certainly had no probs with them.

I have a box here that looks very similar to what you have...this is the 4mm box, I have 2.5mm and 3.2mm. The writing looks the exact same.

What suppliers stock the ones ye have?

Strange though that they have the old BS designation printed on the rods but the EN on the packet.

Could the ZOU stand for Zodian Universal and old Murex Rod

I wonder if the rods dont really belong in the packet

We sell a fair few of those, them and the omnia 30 from Lincoln. We get good feedback on the Hilco red extras, people like the fact they are fast freezing so good in position and as they burn relatively fiercely they are tolerant of rust, paint and grease etc (within reason of course . )

I joined the forum in Aug 2012 to ask exactly your question, the response you have recieved is fantastic, so so much info and photo's of some class welding, really great.
At the college we used mainly Esab and Boehler mostly because the reps gave us the best deal, that was for the first year students, learning from scratch, 2nd and 3rd year students would bring their own electrodes from work, Fincord, Oerlikon and special electrodes, SS, cast Iron, Cutting Gouging electrodes etc, also the electrodes they used at work for positional welding.

With expensive rods you get great consistency and approvals, which may be required for some work. Some might not be nice to use because they've been designed for a particular purpose.

With rods around the Hilco Red price, you don't have the long list of approvals or the guarantee of consistency, although they may be very consistent and have a stable arc etc. They're probably good all-rounders.

With the no name/ own brand cheapies, they're likely to be whatever the seller could buy and box, often with nothing much claimed for them and little written on the box, positions etc. Could be good, probably aren't.

As long as the rods are fairly consistent, through the box and from box to box, a lot comes down to personal preference and what you're used to.

If you fancy the Hilco rods buy a box and give them a try, unless you know someone you can cadge a few from first. Sometimes you see people selling small numbers of rods on ebay. Not the cheapest way to buy rods, but maybe better than buying 5Kg of something you don't get on with.

Some very good points there, I noticed the hi arc have more smoke than murex weldability rods that I used, slag came off easier too.

What would you recommend in terms of best bang for buck for general purpose rods? Something that won't cost the earth and gives good results at the same time.
