Brand new broken Murex?

Ive seen a Mig welder for sale, Tradesmig 253. But its broken, not a scratch on it outside but there is an unknown defect. My question is - what is it most likely to be, bearing in mind its new and; how much is it roughly going to cost?Its from a bankrupt business sale and the guy flogging it simply has no more information. Any experienced engineers out there have an inkling?

Leave it well alone would be my suggestion, could be something very simple but more likely it's something very expensive which is why they wouldn't have it repaired.
Can you honestly believe someone wouldn't have at least looked into what's wrong with something like that?
Did you also notice it's 3 phase or is that no problem for you?

Tempting, but i would avoid it. Typically what happens with knackered welders in industry is that they get sent to the repairers when they pack up - If they are worth repairing, i.e a small/simple fault, they get repaired there and then. When it is something more expensive/major, they get thrown in a corner - written off as it is cheaper to buy a new welder. Slightly odd that someone would fry/knacker a new-looking set, but i've seen it before. A Miller set has just cos me £500 to repair a 'simple' fault.
We have the same Murex welding set. A workhorse, and very little trouble with ours.

I have a Murex Tradestig and a Transarc DC arc welder both at least 20 years old and bought off ebay as faulty . The old Murex machines are easy to fix the electronics unless you are unlucky and get one with a burned out transformer or less likely choke then its probably scrap . I wouldnt bid much more for a newer machine (less than 10 years old ) as even if the transformer and choke is good you could easily find yourself stumped with a pcb that has components that are difficult to identify and almost impossible to test or replace without going to Murex . Having said all that I would still bid £ 50 for a faulty Murex 253 on the basis that some of it will be good for spares if it was too expensive to fix , how much is being asked for it ?
