Brake Squeal

Just got a new addition to the car stable, a 1998 Daihatsu Terios, a nice clean dinky little 4wd to enable me to get up to the barn to work on it over winter.
Only cost me £600 with a years mot, permanent 4wd with a centre diff lock.
The drive is ok for an 18 year old car but once it gets warm you get brake squeal from both front wheels. It's OK in a straight line but a slight turn of the wheel and you get an annoying high pitched brake squeal. It doesn't do it under braking, suggestions to cure it please.

Stone guards behind discs catching / got something caught in it?

I was going to say stone guards. Check the pads aren't down to metal and anti squeal shims are in place.

as said check the pads, or the wear ridge on the disc.

Also check the calliper sliders sent sceised or the pad slides sent full of brake dust.

@pdg Aye, I wasn't indicating your suggestion was wrong, more that an MOT test station could have missed it in a 'sloppy' test.

Has it got carbon based pads? these are prone to squealing.

I've had a few cars and vans when you get a bit of noise only while turning, it's often the guards or something flexing slightly under load especially if they've been bent in the past.

Could be down to brand of brake pads, If I put anything other than genuine pads in my Freelander it would squeal.

When I fitted aftermarket pads in my Transit campervan, I had the wheels off twice on French campsites thinking there was a serious problem because of squealing. I ended up chucking the pads out & buying Ford ones to cure it. It turned out the Ford ones were cheaper than pattern parts in the end.

My Astra had break squealing when turning, sounded out from the front end.
I had them apart for over a month.

6 weeks later Had the rear drums off, Near side the returns springs were past their sell by date and had swollen. swooped them out and no more annoying noise from the brakes.
Just one from the alternator cooling fan.

Well I got around to checking the brakes and it's a weird one. Discs looked brand new with just the wheels removed, with minimal wear but when I took the discs off the hubs the back faces were completely rusted with pits and flakes, only a very thin shiny band in the middle where the pads had broken through the rust, the rust was so bad it had worn away the faces of the pads.
I checked the calipers and they were both free to move so my only guess is that someone replaced the discs with new ones that had been sat on a damp shelf causing the back faces to rust. I can't think of any other reason why the back faces could be so badly rusted compared to the front faces.
I skimmed the discs on the lathe and replaced the pads, the squeal has gone and also the car drives alot better as I'm guessing the brakes were dragging before.
The rest of the car is in good nick so I can only assume that someone did a quick fix to get the car through the MOT.
