Brake shoe retaining pins falling out

This problem cropped up recently just before my road trip so I just wired the shoes temporarily in place and avoided using the hand brake.

These are the retaining pins.

The problem is the slot hole on the brake shield/retainging plate has become enlarged so the pin can easily fall out.

Now I could use a longer bolt through the springs and put a nyloc on the back but the heat from the brakes will probably melt the nylon.

Any other suggestions other than replace the heat shields which is a total pita and are NLA would be much appreciated?

Usually there is another bit like a dished washer, the pin head goes outside the drum have a google for the part

Or if you must use a bolt, use a longer one with the bolt pointing out of the drum, behind the shield and put two nuts on with a spring washer between them.
As above, there should be a domed washer in the kit.

Make a thin washer like thing with a slot/hole thing like the back plate used to have before it got worn. Place this over the retaining pin, and then insert it through the back plate and into the shoe.

Problem is, you may find that the pin is too short now due to the extra thickness of the gadget you just made...

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I thought about making up a slotted washer but as you suggest the pin is not long enough, it only just fits through as is. Will probably go for the double bolt/double nut option. There is also no access for welding unless the entire hub is dismantled.

I did also find some longer pins and retaining washers on ebay so will probably order these up for the next time I'm back in there.

Instead of a nyloc nut on the back, use a k nut, all metal version. Not affected by heat.

These parts r available as spares from most places cheap as chips
In the bush, Africa i used a split pin with the spring quit successfully
The bent legs r on the outside of the back plate

Find out what? Original parts are no longer available from Jaguar, whats wrong with an alternative equally safe fix?

Looking at your photo do I take it the slot is the backplate? If so, as others have said the retaining pins are available separately at most motor factors. Just reverse the pin so it goes through the backplate first & use the spring & one of the domed slotted washers that come with the kits to secure the brake shoes. Thats how most of the brake shoes Ive come across are arranged anyway.

Never remember seeing the pins with a large shoulder, & never remember seeing the pin head inside the drum with spring & retainer on the outside

Rover75 mg zt is the same, backplate rots ever so slightly where the pin goes through. Bolt with washer and nut was my fix, held with some loctite on the nut behind the backplate. If it gets hot enough to soften that loctite the car will be on fire - promise...
