brake shoe alignment tool

On the old Austin Seven you can get a better brake by lining an old worn-out drum with decent sand paper and spinning the drum round the shoes to increase the surface area in contact with the drum, if you see what I mean. Is it that sort of thing??

I got my car back from the garage. To get the mot it had rear brake shoes, shoe adjuster, consumables, front pads and discs. The discs and pads were only advisory but they recommending doing them for the braking balance. The alternative was to drive a car without a mot get the parts, do it myself and them rebook a mot test for the following week, all the time driving illegally. It made sense to me to have the lot done.

The total bill was £283, which breaks down as £78 labour for 2.5 hours, (I spent a lot of time trying to fit brake shoe spring hold down pins and springs parts as they fired off all over the place. To fit them seems to require perfecting the type of precision movement a gynaecologist would be proud of). VAT £47 and the balance in parts. They also cleaned the rust off the drums and painted them which was a nice touch and did not appear on the bill.

I thought £283 was a very reasonable price, plus it helps support a local rural business and keep jobs in the area. Would I use the garage again yes? but its 60 miles away from me.

So, cheers to the small independent garages and rural business up and down the country, long may they continue.

I am pleased you have got the car back and MOTd.
You are right to support your local rural businesses and who would not at those prices, I am paying that a hour at our local Merc. independent here in London.

Sorry chaps was on holiday last week ( @doubleboost I was wearing my rhodes cap similar to yours btw )
so only just seen this and it is load of BS IMO 'alignment tool'--------' tool for a tool' methinks

This is a very simple & reliable drum brake as far as i am aware no special tools are needed
(i have done literally hundreds of them) over the years

There was no mention of any special tool or alignment or anything on the invoice when I got the car back so may be it was a time buying excuse.
But it is driving and braking a lot better than when I left it in the garage.

The car is a 1981 2cv ( the design hadnt changed since its post war launch)

Thats coz 2cv dont NEED brakes, just put ya foot on the tyre-------- they are just a legal requirement
someone got done for speeding in one once, the conviction was quashed ---turns out the gun was faulty
