Can you explain this about flares a little more clearly please?

As far as I am aware there are 4 flares in common use. 1) The single or bubble flare, also known as a Girling flare. 2) The double flare that mates to that, which is a 45 degree flare. Here I'm including the US type flare, as the only difference is the tube nut. 3) Then there are the metric flares. The only difference here is that they use metric pipes and threads. They are still 45 degrees though. Finally 4) the 37 degree JIC flare.

Metric flares are flatter on the side opposite the mating surface than the traditional imperial ones. AFAIK they all use imperial pipe, mostly 3/16 for brakes. From what I've seen metric pipes are a funny number that equates to 3/16. They do use metric fine threads, usually M10 fine.

I seen metric fittings on master cylinders mated to imperial pipe then to imperial slave cylinders. Landrover of course!

Metric equivalent pipe is 4.75mm, unions are M10x1.

I would have to as it's one I've never come across, I've only met with standard metric and imperial sizes used on my cars and never found an oddball one. I have come across mixed fittings M10 and 3/8" UNF where people have joined bits in though, very frustrating at times. Some of the newer stuff must be using different sizes but it won't be bothering me as I only get to fix scrap

My mistake was as simple as asking for "the shortest ones."

Apparently, there are 5 male fittings in common use. Written in the form M10 x pitch - length (spanner size) they are:

M10x1.0-16.7(11mm) M10x1.0-16.7(10mm) M10x1.0-18.0(10mm) M10x1.25-14.2(10mm) and finally M10x1.25-19.5(10mm)

When I returned the ones I had bought, I asked what they fitted. Answer:"haven't the foggiest"

There are only two kinds of threads, standard, and metric!

This all sounds really confusing!
Planing to make some brake pipes for the first time but havent got a clue what size/type of fixings i need?
Imperial?, metric?, i dont even know the diffrence!

Will it be obvious when i take the old ones off the car?

Also, would anybody recomend the draper flaring kit?

Difference between Metric and Imperial is the thread pitch and the outside diameter.

Imperial are UNF (although I have seen BSF) amd metric are the metric fine thread. Some imperial ones have circles stamped on the flats.

The best way to determine what you have is to use a thread gauge, or just buy the nuts from a main dealer for your particular vehicle. You could buy a selection of nuts of known sizes and compare them with yours.

It is essential you get the correct ones, it can be possible to screw metric & imperial components together, but the joint will not be safe.
