Brake fluid in power steering fluid to stop a leak?

I'm currently working on leak number 468 on the Disco, power steering box.

Bit of a search online brought up quite a few people saying stick some brake fluid in, it's cure their leak for 2/3/4 years.

Anyone tried it? I know it needs doing properly but it can't be off the road at the minute. It's booked in for some other leaks fixing next month

Don't know about the brake fluid thing, But when my Land Cruiser steering box started to drip fluid, I put some of the additive that is reputed to swell seals and stop the leak into the tank, Within a week or two the drip had increased ten fold, So didn't work in my case,

Did the same with my Landcruiser. Didn't stop the leak, so I replaced the box. Hopefully good for another 20 years!

Yes, that’s what the Wynn’s stuff claims to do as well

the Lucas stop leak is pretty good if you dain the resovoire and add the whole bottle! you can repcae the seals in the box

Having it up on stands to do the brakes showed me the current leaks, it’s booked in for some diff seals and they will do the steering box, but not until end of feb

I might try the wynns stuff over sticking a bit of brake fluid in, I’m a Yorkshireman and I have brake fluid so it was the cheaper option, however ruining the pump will take it off the road and cost me

This seems to work well, I know it's a cover up rather than a fix but does help.

yes it works well but u don't need to use much...prob and egg cup full.........
did the same on my Tangye 25ton jack used in a press........the kit of seals was around £125.......almost stopped now.........
may not be forever but it'll do for now........
how much is a rebuilt steering box ??

The garage I use will probably strip and rebuild mine, they are old skool with stuff like that

My leaking Land Cruiser steering box, Could not find the correct secondhand replacement as it was the type that alters the steering effort in relation to the speed, New genuine part would have been £2500, Its a big solid lump, recirculating ball type, I completely rebuilt it with new seals, Only cost around £6-00 after doing some research, Apparently there is around 1500psi in the system,

Done a fair few of these and the full seal kits are really cheap, its only a few hours to strip and rebuild properly and you would have change out of a tenner. The seal folk change under the box where the drop arm goes is more to keep crap out than oil in , its the internal seals that need changing.

When I did the land Cruise box it took tons to get the drop arm off the splined taper, The very bottom seal that 8ob mentioned I used a piece of industrial water pump gland packing, As said its only to keep the cr@p out,

Having had a leaky Disco I would just fit the kit as bob said, its a better fix in the long run and will possibly out last the car

They either fall off Gordon or they appear to be welded on We were running a lot of landrovers at the time so I invested in a snapon pitman arm puller, its a beast and never been beaten yet. Nice pic 8ob, I ended up making something on the same lines but using a heavy wall piece of steel tube, tried a big fine screw but no luck, Welded a blank end on the tube and used a 20ton jack with a portable pac, Even then it bent the end plates before cracking off after a whack with a lump hammer,
