Brake Discs

I've been asked to weld some very short lengths of scaffold pole - around 600mm - to the centre of some large brake discs that will be used as stands for something in a garden. I've read various thing about mig welding brake discs, but views seem to differ. Can this be done to give a strong - not structural - weld, and if so what is the best way?

Assuming steel poles, with the galv removed, and cast steel disks, sure.

Cast steel is steel, and welds easily with MIG.

Cast iron isn't any of those things.

I've arc welded to them with no issues.

I think most brake discs are cast iron - due to it working better for braking than steel ( there is a long word for it that I cant remember ! )
you could always weld a piece of steel plate to the bottom of the steel poles , with some holes to line up with a couple of the existing holes on the brake discs , then use a couple of nuts & bolts
I know it would take longer , but you wouldn't have to worry about the steel to iron welds failing

Yes they normally ping and crack when you weld them.

I made something similar, albeit in a bit of a 'Heath Robinson' way, as is often the case. It ain't pretty, but it works and it was simple to make.

The black Pole 'friction fits' into the Hole (its part of a Bird Stand) and the Ali poles (Window Washing thing) slide over it. Its stable to the 1.8m I need for a welding screen

To make a quick and dirty (my nose was black after flap disking) former to bend stainless rod, I welded some angle to the flat of a disc as per picture. I wound my 180A mig up to full whack and it seemed to stick well enough.

Just clean the Scaff poles up very well.
The disc will weld very well.

Can have tricky bits if the disc was blued in its use. But that can bee easily seen if you clean the edge up.

I'll only be welding to the centre so all being well I shouldn't have that problem

I cranked up the amps and made a few more passes.

I made about 20 for MIS, so we could rope of our show areas.
