I had that once with a car I'd just bought, manky fluid and it had some bargain basement brake pads in to boot. Felt fine just driving around town for a bit.
Went on a run to the coast with it, was going down a hill when a combine turned up the other way with the thresher still on the front (naughty boy) - loaded up with luggage and a couple of people I hit the brakes and got down to maybe 40mph before the pedal went away from me and the brakes lost most of their power. I ended up with both feet on the pedal mashing it into the firewall as hard as I could and still had to swerve onto a verge at the end to avoid the moron, complete with plumes of smoke billowing off the brakes.
