Brake cleaner

Im almost out of brake cleaner spray and toolstation no longer sell it cheap, was2quid a can and I get through a lot.

I remember someone saying to avoid acetone for hot work. Is it Xylene the correct one to buy if getting a big bottle?

Any cheap supplyers I can buy from?

I buy Metric Gallon cans from my local motor factors (Andrew Paige), if it's going to be for pre-weld cleanup make sure it says "Chlorine Free" somewhere on the can!
Acetone's good, but pretty damn flammable (even more than brake cleaner...)

Yeah 5 litres from most motor factors is normally reasonably priced

Xylene is of course carcinogenic , I dont like it much , but then again most thinners are nasty ,, if theres a fiberglass shop handy , or a boat builders , they do acetone in bulk , panel wipe isnt bad either, again pro body shop.

Xylene isn't carcinogenic

Its a common component of paint shop thinners, often mixed with toluene amongst other things.

Toluene isn't very good for you if you are a woman of child bearing capacity

Most organic solvents aren't good for you as they are readily absorbed across the skin and via inhalation and have a direct effect on the central nervous system (the dizzy feeling is the start) and the liver and kidneys

Ok ,, isnt proven to be ,, but not enough evidence to say its not , I remember it being banned from out supply list and that was the reason we were told then we were not allowed to buy it any more. ,, Just had a look , and yep your right , not listed as a carcinogenic.
We used it as a slowing agent to get hammerite paint to form its dimples nicely before it dries , and its used a fair bit in warmer climes to slow down two pack epoxy in boat restorations so the soak time goes from hours to days .
I dont actually like the feel of it very greasy .,,, but I will gladly stand corrected .

This is what I usually get, from GSF, used to be just under a tenner but they've upped the price. No idea on the ingredients but it works well for me.

Most paints now are actually basically emulsion , sad thing is that even then they still get a 2 pack top coat , crazy world.

But then again , when you have to put a label on the top of a ladder saying STOP ,, does anything make sense any more.

ALL Diy paints are rubbish. To be honest, I don't know why. I have used water based stuff that made some two pack loaded to the gills with VOC's look pants. It just seems to be very hard to find and rubbish is commonplace?

omg ,,, how big were the buckets ,, did they say Terex on the side ....

Not too many years ago a UK toddler tripped and went head first off a patio into a domestic sized bucket full of water, hadn't the strength in his little legs to kick and make the bucket overturn. Drowned before mother found him.

I can remember my Grandad teaching me to swim and him telling me it was possible to drown in a few inches of water if you were incapacitated in anyway.
