had a clear up in my lock up garage ,forgot i had this found ,it when i moved in to my house a few years a go .are they worth any thing .does just a bout work, could do with overhall realy,does any body repair these. .

check the oil level, if it's low it won't work properly. Jack oil is fairly cheap so it's worth getting some to try it.

Yes, I found a trolley jack in a skip, didn't work so I filled it with oil operated the handle a few times to get the air out and off it went!

I just rebuilt my 3tonne pallet truck because I was sick of topping it up with oil as it leaked, I was amazed to find it had a nylon piston inside, with no piston rings or extra hydraulic sealing apart from the fit of the piston in its bore and a dirt seal on the very outer.
I just turned a slightly bigger piston up to compensate for wear, and bobs yer uncle, wouldnt want to put any limbs underneath it while it picks up 3tonne mind
Now strike me down here, but does anyone else think thats a pony design?

There's no real need for piston rings with a liquid because of its surface tension. Also the bore & piston won't expand with heat like in an engine or compressor so there is no need for rings to compensate.

The jack will be held up by a non-return valve, not the piston; but you should never work under a jack anyway.
