maybe we need a shot of the whole room, it’s neat as it is but layout just not thought properly. It seems to me that the boiler could have been fitted in the spot where the cyl is now and the whole instal could have been fitted on one side of the room- easy to box in ! The window doesn’t help where it’s at but I am sure it could have been improved upon !

No, we don’t need a shot of the whole room. It is where it is and being critical of the installation is not contributing.

Its fine. You have to occasionally recharge it tho. Turn off mains, run taps, hold open pressure release valve. Job done. Looks better too, less clutter, less to go wrong. I had to swap my boiler one out last week, diaphragm was burst. A real PITA as its at the back of the boiler. The only way to remove it was to cut a hole in ceiling above and extract it thru. I'm lucky its a bungalow or it would have been boiler out.

Some of these unvented cylinders cylinders come with everything intergrated these days and it concerns me that in 10-20 years time people will end up having to rip them out instead of replacing an external expansion vessel or pump.

There's not much to go wrong and 10/20 years isn't too bad a lifespan. Folk spend tens of thousands on cars that fall apart in shorter timeframes. I suppose everything these days is a consumable. I'm lucky I've no labour costs.

They are pre plumbed but just a standard cylinder with some preformed pipes and assembled in a factory

Decent cylinders have a 25 year guarantee and the controls on both sides will need maintenance, as does anything

Just thought I would throw up a couple of shots of progress so far

Box complete, looking at the cylinder most of the maintainable stuff is on the front so both upper and lower panels are removable. Relocated the control units to a fixed panel on the L/H side and will also put the immersion and fused switch for the boiler there so all controls are together. Plenty of room to get at the expansion vessels if needed


So a separate numpty question for you plumbing type. We have a sealed system as you can see and I have drained down the rads as we are replacing some. As a result the pressure is zero - does this stop the boiler from firing to heat the hot water or is the hot water circuit unpressurised/separate to CH?

I'm afraid it does. It's the same system as the rads only controlled from a motorised valve.

It should stop it firing if the pressure is too low. Grant boilers say you should have a pressure switch to do this. Not all grant system boilers come with one.

Thanks guys, seems daft really as it means the two systems are co-dependant, as we have half the rads off in the house that could be interesting.......
Guess its time to call in the contingency plan - which is to switch on the immersion - part of the reason for the new tank was we had a combi before, and everytime someone forgot to order more oil we were without hot water as well - so that's why I got a big tank with an immersion so at least we can have hot water if the boiler is off

So, doe the immersion have a built in temperature stat - I assume so - and it just switches itself of when it gets up to temp?

Yes, it’ll have a working thermostat and one or two limit stats to stop it overheating.

Thanks, left it on last night but didn't seem to be pulling a current when testing with the Fluke. Had a check and when fitted they had used a 3A fuse in the plug. 3A for a 2.75KW element seems a little optimistic

Fuse upgraded and will probably run a dedicated supply from the board once the cupboard is finished

best running emersion heaters directly back to a 16 amp mcb rather than a 13 amp spur or plug. they overheat sometimes with the load

Yep, I have a spare on the board from a previously fitted immersion (before our time) so planning on using that slot and running a dedicated radial back to the board
