Managed to bag myself a Boxford AUD this afternoon

it needs a good clean down as its been sat un-used for several years. Its 3phase, but the plan is to run via an inverter(if possible). came with a 3 jaw sc and a Pratt Burners 4 jaw chuck.

There doesn't appear to be any play in the sideways and minimal play on the crossslide.

Looks as if it was originally a school technical department lathe going by the sticker below!

This will displace my Myford ML7, which I will be sticking in the used equipment section tomorrow.

VFD is the way to go
The motor should be a duel voltage type

I may have to quiz you John if I have any problems down the line with it. I still have it on the trailer at the moment. Looking forward to using it, as after watching all your lathe work in your nightcap videos, the Boxford looks a decent wee lathe that is far sturdier than the myford.

In the boot with the 4 jaw chuck and a Jacobs chuck. Didn't fancy it flying off whilst heading down the motorway and remodelling someone's car!

It's an early one,there's no spindle lock that I can see.Most of the 3 phase ones came out of schools 10 years ago,I think John must have got his direct,it was mint.Most of the rest that turn up now look like they've spent the last 10 years in a leaky shed,or been used as an anvil.About 15 years ago the schools started buying the later boxy looking versions with the D1-3 chucks.
You'll be amazed how many spares are still available from Boxford.

the motor is unfortunately not dual voltage - plate shows 400/420 3phase, so I will have to re think my options now.

I think it must be another one of Doubleboosts old lathes - it's got his initials on the change-gear cover

They are a great lathe,,I'm still running the one my grandfather bought in 1949,,,rear drive rather than underdrive,but still going strong.
You will not need the spindle lock as it has back gear,which can be engaged to lock the spindle.

I run mine on a vfd with variable speed control as well as reversing,but if you go down that route remember the chucks are screwed on so heavy cuts are not advisable.
If you need spares Boxford are still going and have some good exploded diagrams on their website.

great tool, you should see a great improvement in versatility over the ML7. just parted company with my AUD after 9 trouble free years..

Got it for £400, which I was happy paying as have been out bid on at least 5 now on ebay, including lchris21's.

I know, was bidding on it, but it went way past my top bid before you pulled it. Looked pretty mint condition going by your picks!

Yeah, was pretty pleased at getting it for that. leaves plenty of room in the budget for upgrades on it. need to get a quick change tool post for it.

Something like this should run it.Give the guy a ring and sound him out.

Don't be tempted by a cheap static converter.If a small motor is running,like a coolant pump,it will align it's self to that.When you go to start the main motor it will stall,and could burn out.

Have purchased a complete motor, vfd and control package set up for the Boxford AUD for roughly the same price as the inverter in your link. Hopefully have it before the end of the week and get the lathe running.

Nice; the lads who used that at school when it was new are probably pushing retirement now...

My second lathe was an AUD, early 70s Metric model with spindle lock, paid about £700 for it in 2004, sold it for £750 a few years later so they're not depreciating much

Got the new motor package all fitted today. Lathe is now running. unfortunately there are a few stripped teeth on the backgear/sliding gear, so they will need replacing. However with the setup I have with the speed controller I should be able to get by on most jobs until I replace the stripped gears.
