Every machines different regarding metric threading, some you can actually disconnect lead screw, wind back and re engage any where like the 45 year old+ Harrisons due to them being made as a metric lathe. Very few are though.
Now assuming a long thread say 1mm pitch, your arms are soon gonna get tired manually rotating chuck and carriage engaged. Had to do it on the one at work.
Reverse is very usefull but there when you need it. Myfords are threaded and a bitch to fetch off, they self lock up so just try it. Theres times when you will have to turn opposite rotation due to machine limitations or something in the way etc, usually cross slide ie mount cutter upside down further away from you.
1/2hp sounds a little underpowered but should have some torque being a GEC.
Failing that 3/4hp 4 pole in an 80 casing from http://www.machinemart.co.uk/images/library/product/small/01/010210430.jpg All quite good being ******, cap start, easy to wire with or without jumper strips, had to do Myford twice inc Dewhurst forward/reverse switch config
When the Harrison motor goes there will be a 1 1/2hp 4 pole going on from above, fed up of blowing 13 amp fuses on start up and have to buy by the hundred. Incidently 3 phase motor on same lathe factory fitted is 3hp.
