Bit of background: My pal has emigrated. Naturally he wanted his workshop so put everything into a container and shipped it half way around the world. Before he did this, everything worked as it should or he was aware of any issues.
Now he is slowly unpacking everything and getting it set up. His Boxford 1130 lathe is the latest thing to have developed an inexplicable fault (first was the Beocentre 6000 now fixed, well you gotta have "tunes"!).
He has the lathe on it's stand all set up as it always was and powered up. For whatever reason he can not engage the feed nut (half-nut). Not even if he wiggles and jiggles the carriage by hand. The half nut and indicator are in line, no burrs and freshly greased:
When he finally gets the half nut engaged it will not then dis engage until he has loosened off the two cap screws shown at the top here:
Then he can get it undone, fastened back up and the pantomime restarts!
The half nut is located by these two pins so no way is it in the wrong place:
Trying to solve this issue with my friend I have realised that the last time I used a Boxford was fifty years ago! Clucking Bell! Time flies when you are having fun, that's for certain.
