Box section steel

I'm looking to build a power rack for me gym, I have done some drawings and now have an idea of the materials I need for the frame.

How much would you expect to pay for this amount of box section and how much do you think it would weigh?

60mm x 60mm x 3mm x 1500mm, Qty: 7
60mm x 60mm x 3mm x 2000mm, Qty: 4

total of 18.5 metres for those too hungover to do maths.

Anyone know of a steel supplier near cambridge that isn't mackays? They wanted nearly £43 for 2 mtrs of 75mm x 50mm x3mm box.

EDIT: ribble valley metals can do it for around £200 incl delivery

Just filled out one online supplier, £207.36, 4@2m 4@3m, Inc vat and delivery

It comes in 7.5m, so if you bought full lengths, you need 3.
Some places will likely charge you for the full length if its not in stock. Probably what happened in your previous experience.

In this instance, Shop4Steel is selling it for £49/length + vat, then £60 delivery...

Find yourself somewhere local, give them a ring, they will most likely charge the cuts aswell.

£207 isn't bad. The problem with local supply is that I'm in the wrong part of the country. Cambridge is more silicon than steel.

not quite sure what you are building (having managed to keep out of gyms for my 60 odd years) but isn't it a bit over the top in section, smaller section is a cheaper price, do you really need 3mm wall?

Stick 120kgs and upwards on your back and tell me you would want anything smaller from the thing that stops you from being killed when you reach failure.

I’ve used them for about 8 months and had no problems they are cheapest that

I have found. usually deliver in about three to four days even with delivery it’s

about half the price of the local stockholder

What's the steel like versus the other stockholders? I can't believe it could be so cheap and not have some kind of flaws?

What have you used the box from them for?

Its good I’ve built table frames, security doors and frames and many other

items, I’ve also had flat and square section and other items of them all good

Don't worry fishpat, they won't be making it themselves in a shed round the back. Steel supplies can come from anywhere. Cheap doesn't mean rubbish with plain black steel, so if it is cheap, buy it.

That makes sense. I am new to to this steelwork game so I'm just being overly cautious. What questions should ask if I call them? As in asking about standards and whatnot? The thing i'm fabricating is a safety piece for my gym so I want to be sure that their product meets my requirements.

You'll probably get a blank stare (on the other end of the phone), if you ask for standards. Hot rolled will be manufactured to BS EN 10210:1997 or equivalent. It could come from the UK, Spain, Brazil, China etc, but should all be fairly similar in quality and composition.

If the piece your making has to be high strength then it may (or may not) be appropriate to make it from other materials than hot rolled. I doubt it though. Whatever, you should engineer according to the strength of material according to generic spec, not with the idea that one source might supply a better product than another (however true that may be).

I won't be welding it by myself. I have a friend who teaches welding at my local college so I will be asking him to help me out. I Plan to buy my first welder later in the year as I want to save a bit and buy a good-un to learn with. And i want to do my research before I take the plunge and spend £400+

That's what I am building so I want it to be able to withstand having large amounts of weight dropped on it frequently. I will give them a call and ask them a bit about the product.

Theres nothing wrong with the material from Brindleys, I even use them myself for small quantities to get round the minimum order charge imposed by my regular suppliers, they are just standard bars cut in half so instead of 7.6m lengths you get 3.8s, flats and rounds come in 3mtrs rather than the normal 6mtrs, other than that its just regular steel,
