Box section gates

Hi folks
I will be welding up some box section gates soon.
Pair of double gates at 2.2mx 1.15m and a single 2.2m x 0.9m

Metal Posts are in the ground by 700mm and fixed at the top so can’t go anywhere

What wall thickness would people use?
I am intending to make a frame with mitred corners with a horizontal brace in the middle. I intend to also have two diagonal braces going to the hanging side like a timber gate to load the weight through the hinges and posts Tom to middle then middle to bottom, Is that over kill?

I'd go for 40x40 box section, 2.5mm wall.... unless you want them extra chunky in which case use 4mm wall

but... there's lots of people on here who've made a lot more gates than me so hang on for their input!

what are the gates for? nice gentle use or getting tossed open and slammed shut? side of your house or a factory gate? etc etc

get thicker gate metal,thats to thin

I have a rolling 9m gate...ends and tops r 50x50x3mm, bottom is 100x50 x 3mm..
I always go heavy gauge....

2.5 wall would need a robust infill.

I’ve built a huge lean to shed the gates will be set in by 900mm to provide a canopy over them, that’s how I’ve managed to fix the posts at the top to the rafters.

Double gates will be opened very occasionally and side gate being the main used. Will be covering the gates with a cedar clad or composite cladding but undecided if that will be infill or straight on the frame

40mm should be fine. I have a 10' gate as you described but with no diagonal braces. It's not over chunky but has been fine for a decade. Was second hand box too iirc.
