Bottle Identification

Hi guys,

I was given this gas bottle the other day by a friend who found it sitting outside behind his new house and said I could have it. I was just wondering if anyone could identify it and whether I would be able to use it for welding or not.
I am currently using disposable bottles which are getting quite expensive.

Probably co2 but by the state of the valve you might want to get it tested.

It looks like a very old W size oxygen cylinder belonging to BOC.
Totally worthless to you, and judging by the corrosion around the neck; dangerous if there is any pressure inside it.

I would give BOC a ring and get them to collect it (free service).

Agree with Paul above, don't under any circumstances try and use it, ring BOC.

Yeah, but get rid of it to BOC. Like i say, if it has anything in it it is potentially very dangerous..!

It belongs to BOC end of argument on that front. It looks like it might be oxygen so defiantly no use for welding! And the neck looks like its very rotten so any pressure inside will come out very fast and violently! No one will swap it for a bottle of welding gas as its BOC's bottle not there's and it's in a danguras condition

yeah, it looks blackish suggesting oxygen, but as everyone else said looks very dangerous i certainly wouldnt want 230 bar of gas sitting in that with a neck in that condition!

be very careful transporting it too, One knock on that tap wher the rust is may snap it off and send the fitting flying, I take it, it has some contents left???

Call BOC and arrange for them to come and collect it

You'd be suprised how easy those connectors would snap off should the bottle fall, especially if its under pressure

It must be about 40 years ago now.In a scrap yard in East London,a cylinder that wasn't chained up,fell over and snapped the valve off.It went through the yard,skimmed up and over some old cars,went over the wall,and through the upstairs window of a passing double decker bus.
