HEHE on way back from barcelona, rally catalunya I think,I said the fuels cheap in Andorra so we went for fuel, two x 1000 ltr diesel tanks so was quite a saving, except for the fifty miles in crawler to get up there !then the fifty miles in crawler to get down into france. It put about 6hrs on the trip but what we saved in fuel we spent in engine revs, nice run though . I enjoy the trip especially, el cas de la pasa.

Just thought-------- are both tyres the same size !?
also check the drive shaft end bolt for torque. -----it should be FT.

My advice is based on my past jeeps, and noise like that always turned out to be my cv joints, the bearings always made a constant noise. All you can do is rule one part out after another. It could even be several parts together.
Hope you find the issue.

Thanks for all your input guys i had a little look but could not see anything wrong. I moved the old tyres to the front and had new ones put on the back as i have never replaced the ones on the back and they look a little weathered although the tread is like new.

I've now put the new tyres on the front doubt it will make any difference but we will see.

This is how the top mount looks not sure how much gap there should be.

That gap is fine, that rubber covered big washer is only for when you jack them up, or when you go airborne on really rough roads ! the top mount's plate will then drop on to the body's strut top pressing, if you only partially jack them up so the wheel is just on the ground there will be play because the rubber only 'nestles' into the body pressing with the weight of the car , that is allowed, BUT on your pics look at the rust !, they have been full of water as said get something like a round water/ juice bottle, the size required and cut the bottom inch off then slip them over the top mount rubber bit you see there. it will prevent them rusting away.
Top mounts wont make the noise you have.

I always put new on the front IMO, people say you should not, but it is in my view, thats where you want the best tyres, I have seen all the tests etc etc blah blah but I am NOT convinced, BUT have seen cars suffer front blowouts and people have lost control and when you get there they have new tyres on the rear!! , call me old fashioned but I would MUCH prefer to have a rear blow out than a front one, at any sort of speed.
I have travel for miles with flat tyres at speed and a rear flat is MUCH more bearable.

I feel like a muppet now putting the tyres to the back has solved the problem. Or i did not put them on the front properly which i very much doubt i checked them with the torque wrench twice.

Well, NO------- you would have been a muppet if the wheel fell off or the tyre burst, as it is, it was an inconvenience----- thats all !
it could be the tread is delaminating on the old tyre, ie there is a gap between the carcas, to the tread rubber and as it is turning it is 'Flapping' -------sort of applauding your driving !!
Also wheels should be checked after running (most aren't BTW), I try and torque up when the wheel is still jacked a lot of places put the nuts on with fingers then drop it then tighten, thats not a good idea coz the weight of the car is on the nuts then

Me too, a rear-wheel skid is much easier to correct than a front wheel "wash out". I'm in RWD and have been for many years, but irrespective of that, imo the wheels which do the steering are the more important.

I think that only happens when a garage nip the nuts up with a windy gun. These were at 170nm seems a lot as the golf is only 120nm. I usually check them again the next day. The tyres look ok i will see if the garage will balance them maybe this may show if they are knackered. I'm using hub centric rings as the wheels are from an audi A4 but all wheels looked like they were seated nicely.

Was trying to save a few quid the ones on the back hardly wear so i suspect next time the fronts wear out i will have to change the back ones also as they are starting to crack. The only tyres they had were Michelin CrossClimate last time i had some summer tyres by sava.

I'd never heard of those but Google tells me they're by Goodyear Dunlop, so obviously not 'ditch-finders'.

Don't think they are very good wore out very quickly and the side wall seemed too soft.

No idea but i will never buy budget tyres again the car feels better than ever (until the next thing breaks).

Got the golf back today going to put it up for sale while its scratch free, originally i bought the golf for the wife but she's only driven it once . Shes not a bad driver but id like to get something that is already scratched and dented and a bit more economical.

It needs to be automatic and cheap < €3000. Would be easy in the UK but second hand cars are not cheap here. She would like a small car but they are more expensive than the big ones.

I'm thinking about an Audi A4/A6 estate 2003/2005 2.5TDI. These have the tiptronic gearbox not the DSG that i'm used to. Is there anything i should be aware of with these?

I am open to suggestions on other options but i would prefer VAG as i always manage to fix the ones i have and i have VAG com.

AH now then------- you are not using wobble bolts too ?

because have seen it a few times before as said earlier they put weight on the wheel then tighten it now if it is not lined up correctly and they are flat faced bolts that could have been the isssue.

Think its correct haynes manual states 170 and got this from continental-tires.

No wobble bolts. Its a pita when you have to use the spare as that is the original.

Nephew lives in Galicia, North Spain, he reckons that it is cheaper to come to UK to buy a car, only problem being that the car would be rhd.

That would be perfect bit out of my budget though at Spanish prices. A little Honda hybrid would be great but again too expensive.
