Seems to be a number of different colour codes in operation French, German..
Which is the most common?

I'm after the type of crimper which squeezes the ferrule from all round rather than just dinging a gert gouge in from one side. Lots of offerings from the chong zing province as usual. Decent brand?? The Weidmuller ones look good but maybe not for £250!

Maybe a kit of a few common sizes plus the tool, then I can add to it with the required sizes as and when.

The el cheapo Amazon ones work great to be honest as long as your not doing stupidly thin cables (they struggle getting crimps on stuff like cat5 cable, anything more “normal” size and they are fine.)

I’ve got a set of Facom ones that I paid £70 for (they are a slightly different type not the ones that crimp all the way round) but they don’t do any better job than the cheap ones.

Can't comment on the quality. Ferrules aren't expensive from trade counters.

Depends on the size of wires, we keep 1.5/2.5/4 and six at work, France,

I can check the colours if you like?

10 brown, 6 green, orange 4, grey 2.5, black 1.5.

I got my kit from beal uk take a look they have lots to offer well they had more than i needed

I wouldn’t get hung up on colour codes, they are pretty meaningless unless you are in an industry that demands you use a certain colour for a particular size - I’ve got German types but that’s only because I half inched them from a German company i was working for

have the same one as @daleyd, I just bought a kit with assortment of ferrules and the crimper included. Works fine. Again for colours, i just check the size against the stripped wire, and use accordingly. My CNC panel's like a rainbow.... I was more interested in a decent connection than a "pretty" installation with all matching colour codes,
That said get some of the double ones, they're pretty handy, especially when making up links or for more than one wire in the termination...

I use a orange Weidmuller one that was on special at £60 or do but it was only £120 list, about ten years ago - I’m sure I looked the other day and there were some at that new price.

Are this type of crimping tool ratcheting i.e require a set amount of force/compression to be reached before they are released, or are they the press-and-hope type?

Colour is unimportant as the cable will denote whats what

The colours obviously have a reason but,
I have not gone as far as working out which is which,

Some of them fit the insulation better than others.
Ie, if a 2.5mm2 is available in both red and green then you might find the red fits over the insulation of a ho7 type cable nicely but for an automotive thin-wall cable in 2.5mm the green is the right fit.

As for the crimping tool, the one that presses all around the ferrule is good for making connections into the terminal type blocks that have a flat bit inside that is pressed down with a screw (like rcd's).
For something like a blue 16a plug where the screw goes directly into the ferrule the Crimpers that put a Vee in are better as you can line the screw up with the Vee.

You can get uninsulated ferrules as well.
That saves you worring about the colours. Crimp them on. Done. You can heat-shrink after if you like.

There are also double-entry ones and most sizes come in a choice of lengths. If in doubt get the longest ones as once they are crimped you can cut them down if you need to.

Knipex, they have 2 offerings one with 4 jaws and one with 6, auto adjust. Been using both my pairs for years and haven't any complaints.

I just use a ferrule thats about the right diameter for the cable being munched down on, the screw in whatever terminal block they end up in will crush them down further.

Its all a bit scientific

I use this German kit, but it does crimp in a line down one side (personally I prefer this type), it's never caused me any problems...

Please shorten the ferules, so there's not as much metal exposed!
