Whitworth are stamped with the thread size. AF are across the flats and are jaw size
So you will get too spacers the same size with different size markings

Actually ww spanners are marked with the thread sizes + 1/16", as nut/bolt head sizes were reduced at some time but spanners were left marked as they were.

Well it is a system,but it's one that has evolved over many years ,with diferent industries ,trades etc.

At one time (long ago) a 3/4" whit bolt would need a spanner marked 3/4W. but I think it was for the war effort the head sizes were reduced to save metal.As already mentioned you would then need an 11/16" spanner to suit. some earlier bolts still had the larger head,and these were always referred to as full 3/4W.

As a spotty yoof the incomprehensibility of various imperial socket/spanner/bolt sizes put me off British bikes for life. That and the fact they were underpowered, unreliable and leaked oil everywhere. Metric was so much easier to understand.

every one to there own. its not a problem if u have been brought up with them. my norton has decent power and good handling and it dont leak oil cos its belt drive
