Thanks very much Mike, I'll try some X800 and see what happens before doing anything else.
Worth shutting down some of the rads to concentrate the flow around the boiler for a while or won't that make much difference?
Won't really make a difference Woz as it will only circulate through the plate heat ex when your running HW, so just use the system as normal.
Although I think if you removed the diverter valve motor the valve would be in HW mode so you could then leave heating on and it would just circulate round the heat ex without running the tap, I'd need to double check which way the valve moves first but if normal use isn't helping might need to try something along these lines for a couple of hours.
Mike
Thanks again Mike.
X400 is in (wussed out of using X800 as it's an old system and some of the pipes are buried in concrete, unprotected, and I'd read a few horror stories about how aggressive it is! )
I'll run it for a couple of weeks then if it's sorted, drain down, put X100 in, job's a good'un!
Oh and silicone grease around the lip sealed the Magnaclean lid so that's a relief.
One thing I completely forgot to mention, when the chap fitted the replacement HE they supplied the wrong one, it was actually bigger than the original but he said it would be fine.
Funny thing is, since I cleaned the magnaclean and refitted it the boiler doesn't seem to cut out during HW demand as it did. It now seems to run constantly albeit with a lower HW temp than it should.
Might pop that thermistor in anyway seeing as I have it, should have done it before refilling it really but I always do things a**e about face.
Before I fit a new boiler last year I took all my radiators off and flushed them out with the hosepipe you should have seen the crap that came out, then I ran cleaner for a week before putting inhibitor in.
Alan
The water that came out was actually quite clean but I know there's crud floating about as the magnaclean is collecting it.
SWMBO has just reported a hot shower so that's good news.
Hopefully it was a nice 'cheap' fix. I say 'cheap' in inverted commas because I bought the stuff from Plumb C£nt£r!
Tbh, the incoming water temp probably isn't helping much, the boiler's having to work so much harder.
Si, what do you do in the summer? Tin bath and kettles?
Was this really two years ago?
Dragging this out of the archives yet again as we've been having increasingly frequent problems with the hot-cold-hot-cold cycling of the HW.
The X400 was in for ahem...quite a bit longer than I planned, let's just say I forgot it was in there.
The boiler had actually been behaving itself but the DHW temp was still lower than it should be.
Drained, flushed and refilled the system along with a dose of X100 and the sodding thing has been misbehaving ever since!
Decided it was about time I sorted it so ordered up a 3-way diverter service kit and a new diaphragm.
Took the valve off today along with the plate to plate heat exchanger and set to work.
Stripped the valve and it was absolutely cacked up with magnetite, as was the primary side of the heat exchanger.
Thought I'd try and clean them with some Wilko path and patio cleaner.
Wow!! That stuff is amazing!!
The valve came up like new, the HE took several goes but eventually got it pretty much spotless.
Refitted everything, fired it up....oh yes!!
Oh no!!
Worked for a bit then the burner was firing up then dying so whipped out the ignition PCB and spotted a few iffy solder joints.
15 mins with the soldering iron later, board refitted and boiler working perfectly!
