I took all your advice on board and got a bit further forward.
The plumber said if we moved the position of the boiler in the outbuilding we could get away without having a flue and save about £900. Still too steep for our budget.
When asked if we really needed to move it, I had to have a think. The wall that my boiler sits on and takes up space on, is also my home office. Call it a pipe dream, but one day I would like to own a set of drawers next to my chair
After a brief chat with the wife, we have decided to replace it in the same position. I feel like I'm working in the furnace room of a school, but never mind. I'm awaiting the figure.
This current boiler is 20 years old and has never been right from day one. We've had it maintained annually and repaired where necessary, but it has just been a real lemon of a beast especially lately. It has driven the other half to tears.

There is nothing worse than a dicky boiler, lived with one for over 5 years and was at my witts end. New house came with an old oil fired Worcester Bosch, which hasn't given us a peep of trouble so far. Long may it last!I took all your advice on board and got a bit further forward.

I think we have just been unlucky to have ended up with Bob The Boiler. I have lived with it for so long that I know when there's something about to go. It's a bit like a car where you get used to the noises until a new one comes along or an old one stops. I've seen me wake up in the middle of the night, not knowing why, but it turned out to be the boiler making a new sound. It doesn't help that my hearing is starting to go and everything sounds like it about to fall apart which is making me paranoid
do you need some kind of gas safe stuff to fit an oil boiler? (because of the flue/fumes?)
if I were you I'd buy an external oil boiler (like the one posted above) and fit it myself... put it outside where it;s out of your way
I've looked at them before when I thought about converting one to run on veg oil... have mains gas tho so not really worth the effort for me.... but the boilers were going pretty cheap on ebay (few hundred quid for a good one) and there's not much to go wrong with them... you can replace the burner unit (pump, fan etc.) for brand new all as one unit for hundreds or quid.
could even install it then have the plumber come check it over? - maybe offer him a call out charge or an hours labour charger / whatever to come give you some advice first? - don't be greedy with him and he should be decent with you :-)

"Unlike gas boilers, and the Gas Safe register, OFTEC registration is not legally required in order to install a gas boiler or tank. The legal requirement is that the installation needs to be checked to ensure it meets building regulations. "

It should be an OFTEC registered engineer according to OFTEC, however if you inform building control first they will inspect it and its all good. Not sure what they charge for this

...bit like solid fuel then. Cost us £180 to get the buildings control chap out to our log burner install. At one point it seemed to me that i had spent more time reading document J than he had (not that i said as much, and i understand that they have to deal with all the other regs also)

Legal definitions, gas is all shall and must. Oil and solid fuel is should. all 3 have distinct and defined legal meanings

I was told by a plumber friend recently, if you want to be particularly cheeky...install it yourself then when it gets its 1st year service the engineer will unknowingly be signing it off

Not true, registration is not the same thing as signing the certificate

Whats the cheeky part of it then? Will the service engineer be doing anything that can't be done by a DIY'er installing it at the 1st year service?

Yes, checking the CO/Co2 ratio so potentially the boiler could have been running out of spec for 12 months
I also note on my paperwork if the benchmark isn’t filled in, the manufacture won’t honour the warranty without it
