It's worth checking the air inlet for blockages. If it's a simple pipe affair, and you have a vacuum cleaner with blow mode, it could be used to try and dislodge any blockage. There could be leaves, or a bird nest in there. Having someone outside to see what blows out, when you do so, would be useful.

It has the symptoms of a failed seal. There will be others that are worn out too. Doing anything to disturb it will make it worse. An engineer with a flue gas analyser can check to see if there is flue gas coming back down the air inlet which will prove that a seal has failed. The flue will then need to be disassembled and all the seals replaced. It’s highly unlikely that the air inlet is blocked. I’ve no idea where you are in Cornwall but try calling GM Services in Roche -
I used to do this kind of work for them. Gav is a good chap and will do his best to get someone to you.
In the meantime avoid using it. Especially if the stove is lit. You could end up pulling the boiler flue gasses into the house.

It depends on air pressures inside and outside the building. I guess you know that the flue is two concentric pipes (one inside the other) with the flue gas going up the inner one and the fresh air coming down the outer one. A leaking seal will let the flue gas from the inner tube get pulled into the outer tube. This can starve the burner of oxygen and the flame goes out. You’re only likely to smell it with the air inlet hose disconnected if there is some other factor influencing the pressure difference between inside and outside the house e.g. strong winds, fire burning pulling air into the building etc.

At the flue under the rear cover , it's drawing combustion air from inside the boiler casing, it has a screw clip to secure it , could the burner when withdrawn for service cause it to come off ? Andvthen hafevthe damper adjusted to compensate, as the flow resistance would be less ? , the boiler is a grant vortex 26kw, the flue is vertical entirely and max 5 m long , less than half the max permitted , am trying together hold of the guy who serviced it in April have the receipt , he fitted a new pressure vessel and burner nozzle , will try him again

Solved, pressure vessel new in April had no air pressure in it, full of water, drained out, pressurised system refilled all good , regarding the air intake no action taken, common to l4ave boiler to draw air from room , will revisit it on next service as burner would need setting up,

It's only 4 months old , pressure has held overnight , monitoring the situation daily , system pressure at approx 1 bar and holding, hopefully that's it
The air side of the pressure vessel ideally needs to be precharged without any water in it, before re-pressurising the system via the filling loop.
We had an expansion tank that had a very slow air leak. It took the best part of a year for it to lose all the air from the air side. That expansion tank was replaced about six months ago, and is presently not showing any signs of air loss.

That’s a new thing isn’t it? Are you thinking a leak in the hall is where the pressure was going?
It’s common for the Schrader valves in expansion vessels to weep and let the air charge out over time. I used to carry a bag of schrader cores and valve tool in my kit. A bit of spit to check after disturbing them
