Hi busa thanks for your advice have you ever used the comet j50 its the best
low hi rod ive used, ive also used the esab 4800/7018 which i dont
like, have also used nexus rods which are great 7018 which came close to the comets. im trying to find the best rods for vertical up
ocean
Ocean.
I've never used Nexus rods so can't comment on them but have used plenty of Esab 48:00 and found them to be a pretty good rod. If you are struggling with 7018 on vertical then try a 7016, they are less fluid than the 7018 and freeze quicker. 7018 have iron powder added to the flux to increase recovery, this makes them a faster filling rod but the downside is that the pool is more fluid, this combined with the increased flux thickness makes them difficult to root with as the flux restricts access to the root gap. 7016 on the other hand are an excellent rod for rooting and can be buried right in to the root gap, they freeze quicker than 7018 and give good root pen on overhead.
I think if you asked any of the 'old hands' which rod was their favourite then the answer would probably be the Philips 56s 7016, now sold as Filarc 56s. A good all round rod for all positions AC or DC. Rooting is generally done on DC Neg then switch to DC Pos for fill and cap.
Bohler EV50 is 7018 and EV50-A is 7016, they are as good as any Low/Hy around. I think that any change of rod takes a little getting used to, once you've burned a few you get the feel for them.
Cheers busa, i think you are right we were trying to root with an esab 4800
7018 which i found difficult, it was leaving a shoelace type weld, up the power and you had to much undercut, the comet 3.2 which is a 7016 is loads better for the root , the esab was ok on the fill and cap, we were using the esab 4800/7018 3.2 for both root and cap for my test piece ms4872 which was annoying you would think they would supply the rods best suited
for the job, still dont know if ive passed or failed yet. cheers for all your help

bohlers fox ev 50s are the best rods ive ever used! all my codings have been done with them and my own weld procedure specifies them also!
get the Vac Pac ones though should cost about 12 quid a pack same sort of price as the esab OK 4800's which are my second favourite lo hi.
the bohlers are amazing in every position and also fantastic for rooting! they let you weld where no other rod would!
I was testing out a few guys before xmas, who brought along and left Bohler OHV's, nice rods all round.................
We use OHV's at work, along with several other flavours of Bohler, they burn quite hot compared to Bohler Fox Sum 6013 and are pretty good for vertical down. I believe they are 'semi cellulosic' which would account for the hotter burn?
