What use would it be to the crook?
The owner would report it to the Police and they would make sure it was made invalid on there computers

This is a bit of a giveaway:-
"He had a scar above the left eye and a tattoo on his left hand possibly the tail of a snake between the thumb and the index finger."
The Police are not allowed to have any tattoos visible when wearing a short sleeve shirt. Therefore the biker could not have been a Policeman.
