From what I can find out, all the thrusters on Starliner (there are 3 different types) are made by the prestigious Aerojet company. They have been around since WWII and were 'front and centre' during the 1960's space race. Details of what has gone wrong are are to find. However, it seems that the the problem is with a type of thruster used only the crew capsule (and not the service module) which may not to have been used before. They are relative small by the standards of rocket engines (25LBS,100N thrust). In the past the valves used to control the flow of propellant to similar thrusters were invariably simple solenoid valves but this time (unusually?) they are using pneumatic pilot valve, which is activated by a solenoid valve. The pneumatic side is operated by the same helium supply that expels propellant from the tanks. A guy at NASA on Youtube described the leak as being related to a disc about the size of a shirt button - I suspect he means an O ring.

nope helium.
hydrogen has a larger atomic radius.

helium is even leakier apparently - hydrogen, although atomically it’s smaller, attaches quite readily to other “stuff”, whereas helium doesn’t.

If you look at the attached technical report, page 4, it seems to show that in polymers, H2 is the most permeable in some materials and He most permeable in other materials. The study did not include metals.
Of course in Starliner, it seems they have leaks, not just permeation.

Where is the "irony" of a man with his "4 foot posts in a concrete bag" commenting on "these big earners".
Those particular big earners are exactly the types who are watching Boeing flush its formerly high value reputation down the toilet. They're still getting "bonuses" while the doors are falling off, the autopilot is driving planes into the ground and whatever their next excuse is for launching a leaky spaceship.
I judge a man by the content of his character, not the content of his wallet. I don't care how much someone earns, I am much more interested in whether or not they're any good. And by my metric, with Post Office staff being hounded to death, banks going broke and cap in hand to the taxpayer, water companies dumping raw sewage into the environment and the DEI/ESG nonsense that is dragging Boeing into the mud - I really don't see how on earth these people are allowed to hand themselves such massive "bonuses".
Perhaps I could be more relaxed about such shenanigans if they were more honest about things, didn't try to take us for fools and just called it a tax avoidance scam.

They were scheduled for 8 days and been stuck up there now for two months. What's worse, just before launch, Boeing decided they wanted to ship some extra equipment up there so they removed the pilots personal baggage allowance. That is all of their spare clothing and personal effects, all they have is what they were wearing and have now been wearing for two months.
