boc gas

HI all.

Im putting this on here because it may stop someone wasting a weekend like I just have.

Last week I bid for and won a cebora 200 amp tig set (on that site)

On friday it came and I set it up put me lid on and it never worked(gutted)

Got on to the seller and he was absolutely spot on. He went through all sorts to try and sort it but to no avail. Then as a long shot after ******* around all weekend trying to get it working I went round a mates place and borrowed his bottle of argon and hey presto it worked.

So im going back into boc tomorrow with there bottle of so called argon and a few choice words.

Like I said I have posted this just on the off chance. If like me when it dont work I am prepared to listen to anything that may help.

Im off to the garage to do a bit of tigging now.

I went into boc on friday and picked up this so called bottle of argon. The label said argon but what ever it is it aint argon. Im just a bit p*ssed that on friday I was going to get my stainless pipes all welded up, insted I spent most of my time trying to find out what was wrong with the welder.(feels better to have a moan about it, sorry for that).

If it says argon on the label it should be argon in the bottle.

Wrong gas in the bottle - sounds horrendous. Some poor sod in hospital could be breathing helium and floating out of the window as we speak!

I doubt very much thats its the wrong gas in the bottle to be honest.


Did you 'crack' the bottle before connecting up the regulator?
Any dirt in the female thread will restrict/stop flow to the regulator.

What were the symptoms with your bottle of argon?

The gas is probably OK, you could have a valve problem, could you hear gas coming out?

Yeah I always crack the bottle before connecting, Anyway I was getting my 10 lpm through the flow meter.

I left out the symptoms in the first post because its hard to explain but here goes.

It was trying to strike an arc there were 3 or 4 small strands of arc coming from the tungston ( scratch or hf ). Samething on ac or dc. On day 2 of trying to find the fault it did arc up for 2 or 3 seconds but it was a very messy arc and the weld was a little porous which is why I started suspecting the gas may be at fault.

I took the bottle back today and they changed it no problem and the replacement works fine. I asked if they would check the bottle content just out of intrest and he said they would just empty it and refill so we will never know.

Ive been welding for years and ive never heard of this before. The guy in boc has been there for years and its a new one to him aswell.

Sounds like a simple case of a poor earth to me.
Usually has those exact same symptoms on starting.
Still, we will never know for sure.

Yeah your right very much like a bad earth but the arc was a bit stronger than that. As I said hard to explain but its working now so that will do me.
