might not be big enough for some folks for mig but it seems a good start by boc to cater to hobby market messaged them on twitter regarding pure argon which i would be interested in for occasional use.

MK are any of your "local stockers" on the list of that link? If so then it's not a very good add if the "stockest" don't have it! It would be nice if the bottle was a bit bigger ( 2 or 3 times amount, for similar price) Or even a " BOGOF" type offer ie get 2 and have the 3rd free (or cheeper) Maybe a chance for a volkszone type deal for "mig-welding" forum members..... we can but hope : )

Or even a free refill for filling up 5 times that year or a fre upgrade to the next size up

Just to let you know, these PD size cylinders is the equivalent to 2 of those small disposable bottles... Max 30mins welding time.

You still pay rental, but no collection charge.

You're better off going with one of the other rent free cylinders that are available.. Albee/Adams/hobbyweld.

MarkG how does the BOC maths not work? 490 (rounded down) divided by 10 (lts per min) not give 49mins (50mins round up)?
One of the headaches I have found with the rent free type (you buy bottle out right type I went for) when I asked about refills they said "oh yes just pop in and we will swap it out" Great I though I live in Bristol and the company is in Smethwick, West Midlands not a problem as I go up there once in a while, usually just one day. So firts bottle swaped out ok but since it's always been "you will have to drop the bottle off and call back tomorrow" well I could be in Cornwall next day!!doh. They do seam to hold CO2 only but not argon mix. Then there was a company in Swindon that went bust? so if you have one of there bottles yer stuck with it. No I don't work for BOC but they do seam too be still around and there are plenty of there trucks going up and down the motorways

i have a bottle from albee for mig welding so i didn't mind the initial outlay of money , but it would be nice to have the option to use my stick/tig welder now and again for those random jobs that pop up now and then and 50 mins of welding time is a lot in my books and reasonably priced i feel to at least getting started with gas rentals

heard about those awhile ago, still expensive compared to rent free i think, but would probably be a great companion for one of the new inverter migs like the esab caddy or the kemppi minarc mig for stuff where you need it to be very portable, most 9l rent free are only 137bar after all and thats 230 quite a bit of gas for the size!

co2 isn't as good for welding as argosheild though, i got out old sip 130 a few months ago to see if it still worked, it did and had a bottle of co2 on it, so i thought i'd hook it up to that and to my bottle of 95/5 and see what the difference was, and it's huge, the little 130 could actually make some respectable looking welds with the 95/5 and some decent strength but ugly in comparison ones with the co2 wouldn't want to do anything with co2 unless i had to.. messy and ugly compared to a mix does do the job though, when i first started mig welding it's all i had, i did all kinds of things with it, wouldn't go back now is all i'm saying!

I have just gone through one of these bottles in no time at all.

Will be investing in a larger size bottle as I think I shall be using up a fair few of them

Using 494 litres in 30 minutes seems very high consumption (nearly 16.5 litre/minute). How does this happen? Inaccurate gauges? Leakage? Loss in the hoses during stop-start work? Using high gas flows to cool very thin metal during car body repairs? Under-filled cylinders??

Can overall gas consumption really be that much higher than the 10 litre/minute figure that is so often quoted?

i saw on the albee gas site they recommended 18 Lpm for argon mix so it's no wonder people get through so much gas quickly i usually gor for a about 8 or 9 depending on the conditions.

I can't recall ever impatiently cursing a bottle for refusing to run out quicker
