Bobber axle material ???

Hello chaps.

I'm in the middle of building a little bobber and need a bit of advice with the rear axle. The frame is a hardtail and the rear wheel is a 16" x 3.50 spoked harley wheel, it will be powered by a CCM 644 single lump, so not a huge amount of power. It needs a 3/4" axle approx 13" long and I've got a piece of ' 230 M 07 EN1A Freecutting, colour code green carbon steel '. Now I'm no engineer, does anybody know if this would be ok?

I can't remember off the top of my head what the recommended grade is but I know where I read about it.... Have you tried www.chopperbuilder.co.uk?

If you're building a bobber you'll find loads of like minded people there and a lot of expertise. If you're shy you could just use the search function otherwise introduce yourself and ask there

I wouldn't be suprised if you found freecutting strong enough, but I dont
think it's suitable. I use an alloy steel, EN16/19/24/25,they are harder and tougher than freecutting.

No, free cutting mild steel is not suitable for your rear axle, even if structurally capable the threads will be too vulnerable. EN8 minimum - I'd use EN24. W/A

Yep EN16t.

Anything "better" tends to snap if it fails.

EN8 is quite popular with the home build off road crowd, and again if it fails tends to bend rather than snap. Anything "lower" than that is just going to bend for a pastime on a rigid.

Slightly more sensibly, I think you'll find that Zodiac and most other custom suppliers have them in their catalogues.

Incidentally, it's a spindle.

Cheers chaps, I've managed to get an off-cut of EN16t from a local tool maker. It fits the taper bearing spot on so just need to cut it down to size and thread the ends.
