Board on board fence on a slope

Hi all

I have a fence to replace at my house. The ground has a gentle slope.

I wanted to do overlapping close board style for privacy.

I have racked picket fencing with the ground before but wondering how this style of fencing takes it?

I could maybe cover slight gradients with a capping on top?

An alternative would be to dig in some gravel boards to get level all the way along then the boards could go on plumb?

What yous reckon?

Or build it, then run a circular saw along a batton screwed where you want the fence top.

overlaping boards will get wind issues compared to yorkshire boarding which is a board either side of the length of wood

it also allows the wind through therefore not a big sail in the wind

with board either side of the wood just tighten the overlap a bit more then you wont see through it

Roofing lates bend to give you the guide. Personally Id not go solid board, as the wind will put a lot of load on the posts. Id leave gaps say 20mm

Cheers will have to think about it as thats been mentioned twice now. I was aware of it but though if i sunk the posts good and deep with proper mix concrete it might be ok

Post normally go at ground level…..Depending how they are treated, Ive posted supposedly treated witheco friendly treatment lasted 7 years

I'm aiming for good privacy and options in Northern Ireland are more limited

A lot of places here don't stick feather edge for example

Would using concrete posts as opposed to timber improve wond resistance of board on board?

110% use concrete posts. Timber posts will rot out in a matter of time and break clean off then you have the whole fence to replace over again including the digging.

cant see why they even sell soft wood posts , theyre not suitable for our climate , concrete ones arent much dearer and last a lifetime

my front fence is 4 foot high using 3 inch posts i got free from a wagon firm as chocks i dunked them in a bucket of genuine creosote for a week then concreted them in . i coat them evey 2 or 3 years and they have been in 40 years now

i have large 10 inch square gate posts that have been in 150 years with minimum rot , it belonged to british rail so i presume they just chucked them in a vat of creosote for months along with railway sleepers . any fencing id do in future id use concrete posts and panels with 2 coats of genuine creosote before fitting

Makes me nervous now I did a fence at other end of garden with 21 wooden posts last year

Will swap to concrete when they fail lol

That is great going! Was it older lumber maybe? Modern timber as we know is generally poor quality

pretty sure wood isnt it what it was years ago , fastest grown rubbish they can find , plus look at how warped and twisted most of it is , at least a concrete post is straight

then i bet the treatments years ago was some nasty stuff that worked , now it gets shown a bucket of child friendly eco treatment that washes off

I bought a brand new place in 1983, the garden fences were concrete posts with rails then 6 inch boards with 3/4 inch gaps. I was past there, last week, my daughter lives round the corner. Still the same fence.
