Blue Butane CALOR gas bottle reqd in stoke on trent area

Just getting set up for tinkering in the garage over the winter months and got the Calor gas heater at the ready. The bottle is feeling quite light so i'm figuring that it wont last much longer. The bottle isnt a geniune Calor bottle so my local Calor gas stockist (a mile down the road) wont accept it which means that i will have to take out a 'rental' charge on a new bottle contract.

Just wondering if anyone in the Stoke on Trent area has got a Blue Butane CALOR gas bottle sitting at the back of there garage that they came by without taking out a rental on the bottle and fancies off loading it

Bear in mind you may have to change the regulator, IIRC there are 20,21 and 27 mm regs out there, different sizes to discourage you from switching suppliers!

Shell takes 21mm and I think Calor are 20. Have a look underneath where it fits to the bottle, the diameter should be stamped on.

Why use Calor,they are the most expensive. Looking online many suppliers are almost eight pounds cheaper than Calor and deliver free.

Another way is to get an addapter of ebay and go to local garage and refill with lpg,, this is what i do,and get more gas for your money as well,,

Or cut it open and make a woodburner got to be the cheapest heat source.

Didnt know about the adapter so i could refill it at service stations, did a quick google for more info and they are available but it appears that service stations dont allow/like bottles with 'adapters' although you dont seem to have that problem. As i also have a touring caravan i will do a bit more research on this - just my luck that the van is fitted with a red propane bottle otherwise i could have moved the bottle from the van over winter when it isnt being used and then run the heater in the garage over winter. I am a bit confused by the fact that caravans can run either blue butane or red propane by fitting the correct regulator but if you try and find if the same can be applied to portable gas heaters there doesnt seem to be any mention of this being possible

Funnily enough the idea of a wood burning stove has crossed my mind but as i'm still a beginner at welding and a bit nervous of making sure the gas has all been removed i havent taken it any further. I have contemplated buying 1 from someone who has already made 1 up and then just go about installing the flue.

this sounds interesting whats the price of getting a gas bottle exchanged and the equivelant at the station 4 the same amount

why not put a wanted ad on your local freecycle or freegle group ? Thats what i did to avoid the rental charge too

I was just about to go with the freecycle suggestion when i gets a phone call from a friend of friend who via word of mouth had heard what i was after and i am now the owner of a 3/4 full calor gas bottle with regulator

I now have 2 options, budget gas (my original bottle) have a stockist about 7 miles away and as Dave Sherwood mentioned "cheaper suppliers than Calor are around" and in this case £10 cheaper OR the calor stockists a mile away

I arent blessed with the greatest patience, preffering to rush around mithering and costing my self more in the long run, but in this case just waiting for budget gas to come back to me with a local stockist has provided me with a calor bottle and a cheaper alternative to calor if i so prefer.

I bought an adaptor from ebay in the summer with postage it was 30 quid, to replace my small propane would be 15 quid to fill it was under a fiver, cant wait to fill the 47kg bottles we use for the hob at home as they are around 60 quid to replace

the one in your bottom picture is the one ive got !!!, wouldnt mind the other one with the two l/hand male fittings as i could then empty the track welders bottles every nite

Flo-Gas will take Calor bottles in exchange.
The other night filled up a 6kg bottle with an adapter. Cost 85.9p litre and 11 litres in the bottle so approx 1/2 the exchange cost. The 19kg however are cheaper to get already filled (Stoddards, Cheadle, Stoke-on-Trent) @ £28 making 80p litre.
I've placed a wanted message on Freecycle for an empty 47kg with no reponse

thats not good !! will take me a few years to get my money back on my adapter then if im only filling my 9kg, i bought it to fill my 47s up !!

Can you overfill a bottle with propane? I used to do Co2 by weight for paintball and a lot of guys would deliberately overfill their bottles so once warmed up the burst disc would go.

filling smaller bottles of a 47kg u cant overfill but from the fuel station u can overfill

What is that because it's pumped at the filling station rather than just weight and pressure from bottle to bottle?

The adapters have marking on the side which says how many litres each size bottle holds. It's then up to you to CAREFULLY only fill the bottle with that amount.
So simple answer to can you overfill a LPG bottle is - yes (and dangerous)
