i have a berlan bmig 140 it welds fine with gasless flux cored wire but the second i try to weld with plain old welding wire and some c02 and it spitters and spatters like a bitch giving a sea gull crap weld can any one help i have messed about with it for hours on end one minute its ok and the next its just junk

Have you changed the polarity?
Flux-cored uses negative polarity and solid wire uses positive
Plain CO2 is more spattery than argon/co2 mix but you can still get acceptable welds using it.

pure Co2 does tend to spatter more have you also made the torch possitive as for gasless the torch is set to negative

hi i think you need to change the polarity of your earth , im sure some one will let you know on here . has it got a positive and negative socket for the earth lead ? if your weld is full of tiny holes like an areo chocolate bar then it would sound like the gas isnt shielding the wire properly or at all . i usually set my regulator at arround the 5 psi mark on my mig . put some photos of your machine and weld on the forum and you will get some answers for sure . there is a lot of experienced welders on here . i dont think they will be much wrong with your machine as germany are very good engineers and dont make junk as a rule in my experience . ive got to give them credit where its due

i have changed the torck to positive and earth to negative i know that c02 is not as good as argo co2 mix but this is horrendous nothing i do makes a differance i have good earth clean steal changing all the settings to adjust heat and wire speed makes no ods im bulding my trailer and did most of the work with stick but i though id give it a bash with the mig for the finishing work no happy

does the gas come out of the shroud when you squeeze the trigger ? you should here it .

yes it does come out of the torch ports upon further investigation of the actual torch from my experience of other welders i cant see any oring between the trigger feed and the actual torch feed Ie the bendy bit up to the shroud also the shroud is a parallel shroud should i try a taper shroud? do you think the lack of oring might be the issue there is plenty of gas in bottle/bottles as i have a couple

i don't think it would make that much difference what shroud you use although a taper would probably be the best . if you unclip your wire feed tension er so when you press the trigger the wire doesn't come out , wet your lips and hold the shroud close to your mouth and press the trigger . you should feel it and it should cool your wet lips , you should here it as well , it's just a quick test i always use im sure other people have different methods .

you could also try uncoupling the gas pipe from the regulator and use a compressor to blow air down the gas pipe into your torch the time pressing your trigger on the torch to activate the gas solenoid . if air comes out of the shroud you will know that the gas side of things is working with out any obstructions . you can also try a new torch ( easy if its a euro connector as the torch your using may have a porous gas liner thus losing gas before it gets to the shroud . it also could have been nipped partially obstructing the gas flow . the more psi you set the regulator the more gas should come out f the shroud , if it doesn't the problem lies in the gas line ( providing your bottle has gas in it to produce the pressure )

i have used snoop all the way from bottle to torch to check for leaks and there is none and i get good flow from the gas line when torch is activated im thinking the charge is being reduced becuae of the lack of the in o ring at the joint betwwen the torch switching controll of the torch and the swan neck of the toch this producing a very unstable arc becuse when you bump the shroud on the metal it arcs and sticks i think i will try fitting a oring where i think it goes and take it fron there if there are any other sudjestions let me know

well the shroud shouldn't arc at all so yes they is a problem there . try what you say and see how it goes from there .

If the shroud is arcing then you most likely need a new one as I expect there's spatter inside it which is shorting it out.
It should be insulated from the gas diffuser.
You could try poking it about inside with a pointy thing to see if you can dislodge it.

got it fixed it was between a damaged oring in the switching controll and the shroud the insulation on the shroud was screwed thanks for all your help
