Seems Richard Noble and Andy Green are getting together to have a crack at the 1000mph barrier using a jet and rocket powered car:

They've got funding to involve schools in the project to encourage engineering interest, so for anyone with kids they ought to have some fun in the classroom. Also they are looking for somewhere 10 miles long, 1 mile wide with a good surface for running supersonic cars. Anyone who has such a stretch is encouraged to write in.
Sadly I'm not sure the lack of engineers has anything to do with people not enjoying projects like this. More to do with it being possible to make a better living doing just about anything else, or oddly engineering just about anywhere else but the UK. Good on them though. A big step in the right direction.
