Bloke travelling along power lines in what 'looked like' a boat-what weight can the lines hold?

There was a great film about 20 years ago,with the late great Pete Posthelthwaite in AMONG GIANTS,about a gang of pylon painters.

we had a group of them staying locally
in the pub of a night they were very rowdy
one of them looked like Jonah lumu at 7ft tall and 3 ft across.

My eldest lad has a team of them working for him.......hes with NORTHERN POWER........the smaller pylons
He explained to me how they get there and how they are protected.........and no they are not on min wage

This is one of the photos I took. From further away, before I went closer to take a photo it did resemble a boat.

the reason it looks like a boat is is a a canvas safety sheet underneath to stop them dropping tools and the spacers which are bloody heavy even though there aluminium there big . aguy round the corner from me lives under the wires and they dropped one it went through his roof tiles through the ceiling andf embedded in to his dressing table they went round instantly repaired the roof got the ceiling plastered decorated room bought him a new dresser and gave him 200 quid compo .they can drop one on my house anytime for that

faraday is if your in a metal cage and the power is all around you . sometimes they use a mesh metal suit the one he is using is just an earth wire rod clipped on to the copter to equalise the potential

I think when our main supply line collapsed, Scottish power said the lines could take the weight of a small car. The snow must of been the wrong type the night the lines and towers came down

the metal gets brittle when its freezing+ the extra weight it only needs a couple of wires to go and it pulls the lot down

they built the pylons near us when i was 14 and pulling the wires along with winches. i bet a lad id climb it for 2 shillings and sixpence .i did climb it and got the cash but i did crap meself . i dont mind heights. used to do hangliding and parachute jumping and think nothing of it up to 1300 foot dangling from a carabina and a nylon strop under the wing

This is a set of overalls made from or woven throughout with conducting fibers. The suit is in effect a wearable Faraday I have i have been on site in US and seen Haberfields guys working at close range, I think there is a more metallic woven type as well The earth stops the flash over of static from the line to helicopter.
You can get a good belt with long lines off helicopters
The flying is way beyond any I would try There are 2/3 firms who are wire specialists another is Air2
The guys who pull the cables are another world also threading cables through pulleys

daughter worked on them offshore for 5 years . she climbed them every day even though they have a lift inside . heres the emergency exit practice

Stepping off attached to a constant rate descender when training takes a bit of trust.

One chap on the training I went to only drove the boats but still had to do it. They were close to having to stamp on his fingers.

I make the absd switches that turn the power off. Company I work for supply insulator equipment etc to the big power firms and railway companies. My boss was a linesman for years.
