I'm at the end of the street here and due to the estate builders having been close relatives of Smith and Jones the combined drain/sewer has a slight fall back to my end rather than the other way. So every once in a while the crap from further down the street (aided, no doubt, by the insoluble contributions of two females of reproductive age two doors down) causes a rise in the stench level outside my back door and I have to reach for the drain rods.
To complicate matters, one householder has block-paved over one of the few manholes in the street (prat
) , so I have to use THREE sets of drain rods to uncork the porcelain... about 70 feet down the road

Next door neighbour had her garden done and the pipe collapsed under he patio. Sewage leeched into the soil under her entire garden.
I didn't manage to rod it cos of the collapse.
Builder/garden contractor had removed a manhole as well as the collapsed pipe.

Many thanks for all replies,now sorted for £85....he managed to clear with drain rods in the end ,...he explained after struggling himself that there is an interceptor,,(s bend) which has a second rodding eye above the more obvious drain hole...he jetted the drain after clearing the blockage.....pics will be kept with the receipt so i know in future....did make me smile ,as i touted for bookeeping for my mrs he told us he is a qualified accountant ....bsc aca...

I had a prob here in this 30 yr old bungalow just after we moved in 5 yrs ago .
Rodding from above the blockage was useless , so I use a bog standard quality yellow hose pipe with plastic nozzle set to jet and slowly fed it in my branch pipe from the free manhole end that is in the neighbours garden .
Once it was about four feet in I got my lass to turn the tap on , the rigidity of the hose allowed me to keep feeding it up ,after about 30 feet all sorts of gunge started to come back along the pipe so I then withdrew the hose , got the mrs to turn it off first ( been caught like that once before Blech ! and vomited )
A quick check of the blocked inspection hole showed a dropping level of stuff .. once it got to the bottom of the hole I then inserted the hose at this end and got Alison to turn the tap on and run a cold bath tap and flush the toilet.
The block cleared , then it was just a case of hosing down the mucky hose pipe and dropping a bucket or two of water over the bit I could not reach.
On trying the run the drain through with a gully cleaner on the end of the brushes I hit an obstruction about 8 feet in .. after sorting out a further two more block ups here over the next five months I ended up digging up the inspection hole sump and pipe back for 15 feet .. a jointed pipe had not been correctly assembled .. the rubber seal had dropped down inside and limestone water had calcified inside the joint thus reducing the effective pipe diameter .
A new joint and a rubber joiner with clamp cost me about £23 , I cut the pipe back 17 fet from the inspection hole with a tennonsaw that I took the back strengthener off . Then cleaned it all up , bevelled the edges , wiped some butter round the pipes , reassembled things and tightened up the clamps on the rubber joint .. back filled the pipe with a 1 tonne bag of 10 mm granite chips to 300 mm above the pipe then refilled the trench . To date four years later nothing has gone wrong.

If the guy is that much of a pratt I'd drop an anonymous letter to the local planning officers with a photo of his d block paving work saying what he has had done. Those holes are there for a very good reason as you have found out. You can get high pressure jetter extensions from the likes of Wickes and all the big DIY & garden centres that sell decent pressure washers that fit on a powerwash , I think they will jet satisfactorily 30 mtrs but they are best used from the unblocked end to break a blockage rather than to try and force in at the blocked end through several metres of compacted gunge cemented in place with tea leaves , fat & nappy liners etc.

Aye, I have one of those B&Q type jetters for my pressure washer, it's only been used twice, but both times has cleared the drain and saved me ££.
1st time I came out the back door and was instantly up to my ankles in soggy bog roll, I knew it wasn't ours as we don't use pink! It was being forced up out of the gully under the kitchen window of all places, and out of an access at the street end of the drive. Couple of prods with the rods followed by a blast from the jetter and it went SCHLURP and drained away.
2nd time was just last week, noticed a downpipe from the roof had water gushing down the outside of it, assuming it was the usual leaves etc I climed up to the gutter and found it all clean, but flooded. poked me drain rods down the down pipe from the roof and found they went down freely, all the way to ground level and slightly beyond. **** thinks I, I'll have to dig that up, but an old mate was visiting from Oz, he suggested cutting a hole in the downpipe with a holesaw just above ground. This we did, water gushed out of course, then poked a sparkies snake down and found the block was 18" below ground. Out with Mr B&Q jetter, 3 minutes of 'orrible brown stuff coming back up the pipe and away if went. I then chopped a bit of ally plate, bent it to fit round the pipe and fixed it on with some mastic. Sorted, and if it ever blocks again I can pop that plate off to clear it. Evidently this is why I've seen modern downpipe with little screw on access points just above ground!
