blocked drain/sewer

drains are well backed up ,not had a problem in previous 3 years ,i've had a good go at rodding ,but only got a screw and rubber plunger ends for the rods,which don't go more than 6ft and i can't get it to go any further ....i've given up for tonight,..i think i might have to get them jetted tomorrow,,anybody used dynarod type companies at home ?...used them for work but never had to pick up the bill...what companies have you used?how much did it cost ?

if u cant loosen it with rods with a screw on the end at 6ft i dont think a jet will be able to. the drain hasnt colapsed has it

Yes, DON't DO IT! put it through the insurance if you can. Had a blocked sh*tter once & finished up costing me around 600 quid by the time they'd finished!

Iirc, you pay for the call out, and then per hour. They seem very adept at stringing a job out. Might be cheaper to go for a private jetter...

Thanks for replies ,it could be a collapsed drain .... dynarod actually offer free quotes before starting ,i've had a look at local companies who offer jetting services with a free quote as well,,insurance is definitley worth a shout ,,,£600?.....was expecting £150 for 10mins work ...not 4 times that

Are you the only house on the sewer or does it run to the neighbours and beyond , are they blocked ? Dont phone Dynarod till you are sure whos paying what ! its expensive !

Ha ha ...we are the 2nd last in a run of 6 houses before the main sewer ,was hoping it was just ours ...and have put off speaking english to the polish kids next door..very hard work.....at least until tomorrow

Phone Environmental Health, they may come out but if not they will put you in touch with a jetting firm. The difference is EH have a contract cost of about £40 all in, if you contact the jetting firm direct its something like £140 call out plus £20 per hour.

I have to get the rods out now and then for work ! I dont charge call out fee ! Mostly nappies , the disposable kind , for some reason the ladies think they will go down the toilet without trouble

Pipe in acetylene and oxygen for say 25 minutes, then drop a match down the pipe.
That should do the job.

Spot on. Pre 1937 shared pipes are classed as section 24. Looked after by local authority or more usually water company now.

When I worked for one of the water companies some years back they preferred to use private jetting companies to clear these drains as they tended to result in blowouts in peoples gardens. Better that the damage was the problem for the jetters insurance than the water companies.

A jetter will do a far better job than rods of clearing a blockage. Even within a few lengths of rod you lose a lot of the applied force due to flex and friction in the pipes. Best to rod downstream but jet upstream.

Pre 1937/38 for the communal drain ,which makes repairs the responsibility of the water authority ..if i remember the site i saw earlier..unfortunatley we must be 60's or 70's ex council....but thanks for mentioning it Pedro.....all good info for anyone replying to this thread in a few year time ....
