Sometimes a VERY light sniff of easistart or brake cleaner can help whilst cranking but make sure they are very light tiny squirts just to help it fire.

The problem is you dont achieve rail pressure with air in system and just cranking isnt fast enough, If no rail pressure theres no injection,no injection no fuel flow then nobleeding etc etc

I know about towing, must be done pedal up in 2?3rd gear.
tried again today switching on for a time then cranking, then un plugged water in fuel wire ,re plugged, after 5 secs it started ,ran for 5 secs, stop engine man light remains on whilst cranking, so have disconnected both batteries, will try in morning.

Running for a short time suggests that the filter is not full.
You can take it off and fill it with clean diesel from a can.
Disconnecting the batteries will have no effect if fault codes have been stored.

I would say definitely air in the supply line.

Am I the only one here that bleeds up a transit with an airline ? An airline stuffed in the filler neck with a rag seal around it ( not mental pressure) , the outlet pipe pulled off the filter housing while someone gives the tank a few gentle puffs of air, connect while its running clear . Pretty much the norm here if there is air in the system.

Bob I have done it that way in the past,
Same as manual hand primer on the filter housing, and dragging transits down the road regularly,
(Just make sure you have wound it overy enough on the starter to get some oil pressure then use 3/4/5th gear and very slowly up on the clutch)
As well as brake cleaner through the inlet.

Are you sure the water drain is sealed properly? if it was fine before it was slackened and stopped after, it sounds to me like it is drawing air in there!

just blow diesel up to the pump with airline, the older pumps just seem to have absolutly no intrest in suking diesel up,

rember an old TDDI transit with the return line off we resorted to towing it and it wouldn't even prime then 10-15 seconds with airline job done, or if you or your minions are good at running out of fuel cut the feed line an put a primer bulb in it as found on many old pug diesels

as Pondi said "nickk, under bonnet, right hand side of air filter housing you'll see the fuel supply to the fuel pump, small valve on top, a simple cap with tyre valve under it, Do not remove the core and suck fuel through here, this will remove air up to pump, removing smaller return pipe on filter hosting, think its closest to bulk head and sucking here will remove air from pump and injectors."
Leave the valve core in the fuel line. Switch on the ignition and operate the priming bulb. You will see the air being removed through the clear fuel line. Keep pumping for a couple of minutes. If still getting large amounts of air then you have a leak drawing in air somewhere, may be the water drain. Catch the fuel in a jug and if clean it can be returned to the fuel tank. Remove the priming bulb and start engine. Run for a few minutes at a fast idle 1000-1200 rpm.

sorted now ,just a lack of a full filter , drained what was left in the canister-200ml,so over a duration of 1hr,i added a further 250mi! ,it then started on 2nd attempt.
CKJDJK;i will buy one of those in case I ever run out.
my van must be a between models as I have neither a fuel pipe by the air filterer or the priming port by the common rail.

More likely others are confusing the old tddi and the common rail tdci.
I've had mk6 and mk7 transits and never seen a priming port on or near the filter housing.

A question, did you use a genuine ford filter ? there are know sealing issues with aftermarket filters.

all my filters are MAHLE.

And that may be who makes the ford ones
Price is about the same for Mahle or Ford on ebay.

Most filter or air leak problems on the Transit forum seem to get cured with a ford filter.

Quite often you open a genuine box & see Mahle, Mann, Hengst or Purflux mentioned.

Normspanners has pointed out previously that he's had allsorts of problems with aftermarket filters on Transits & always fits genuine ones. When I wanted one for my mk6 Tranny, the genuine Ford one was cheaper than the aftermarket one anyway.

I recall the same years ago with VAG filters ,they were losing trade to the factors, so reduced their prices.

Alot of Main Dealers have made their prices more competitive on run of the mill stuff, But they still know how to pull your pants down when they can!
