If it hasn't got a priming pump, Then you could use one of those. Not the most effective, But they do work after some effort. Other options is to use a Vacuum Bleeder to pull the fuel through & if you get really stuck with air in the system Brake Cleaner/Easy start.

no lift pump or injector pump, its a common rail set up, never had to bleed anything this modern
wouldn't dare use easy start.

I did the filter service via the test button, it showed ok, so then drained the water trap, then left van 2 days started ,drove 20 ads,it stopped, so assumed air, noticed I hadn't re-plugged air flow meter ,as I had changed air filter ,plugged it back ,still no go ,so assume air insystem.

Should bleed itself just make sure you have a good battery. Air flow meter shouldn't make that much difference.

have fun if its on without the leccy lift pump it'll be a twerp there may be a pumpy thing on the filter houseing if not easyest way is pull the return line off and airline in the filler neck with a rag stuffed round it

all the mechanics I know just fire them up on easy start

if you want to bleed it crack off all the injectors at once and spin it over, it should beel from them all at the same time


if it's being a pain and you decide to tow start it... don't do it the normal way, waiting till you're going to lift the clutch, you need to be in gear with the clutch up from the start otherwise the timing chain can jump :-o

Diesel vehicles can be a pain to bleed. Had a Mondeo where I work previously which was a pain to bleed, Also had to use easy start on a VW PD engine as that was a swine to get started also.

for future referance, when changing a fuel filter ALWAY"S fill it up with new fuel before u go to start /bleed it.........
I'm pretty sure ur's has a lecy pump........normally turn the ign on then off after 10-15 sec's, a couple of times is usually enough to bleed it thru to start........
bit worried about the disconect of the air flow meter........if all else fails, I'd disconnect the batt and reconnect after a few hours or overnite, when reconnecting the batt it should re-boot the ECU and clear the temp fault......

sorry but this won't work, its a common rail, if you crack off the fuel pipes and crank it the pcm will detect no or low fuel rail pressure and just close the inlet metering valve.

nickk, under bonnet, right hand side of air filter housing you'll see the fuel supply to the fuel pump, small valve on top, a simple cap with tyre valve under it, remove the core and suck fuel through here, this will remove air up to pump, removing smaller return pipe ob filter hosting, think its closest to bulk head and sucking here will remove air from pump and injectors.

your transit will have no lift pump in tank, some newer euro 5/6 will, easy indication is if it has a yellow sticker on the passenger a pillar

Kind of defeats the point of the filter then doesn't it? You might be able to fill it via the correct port but making a sweeping statement like this doesn't really help people who aren't any the wiser.

thanks for the tips ,i did make it clear ,I hadn't changed the filter, on a previous service I changed the filter no problems.The old stuff was so much easier.....

So why do you need to bleed the fuel system if you haven't changed the filter?

because the engine stopped in 20 yds & was fine until then, so I assumed draining the water trap allowed air in.the only other thing I changed was unplugging the air flow sensor in the pipe from the filter.

I would prime it & get it running. Has the Van got an engine management light on? If so then you would have more reason to look into other potential problems.

it did have before I re plugged the air flow plug, since then gone out.

what ever you do DONT TOW IT !! if you do, it can make timing chain jump teeth
