Central heating should be very scientific and predictable. But it isn't

nope
? which side does become hot upon if its the return side which can happen it can cause some issues
but only can tell upon start up of your central heating system
though it does appear yours is air locking
Have you bled it since?
ok im roasting like a xmas turkey as the moment a virus with a single rad in the house thant is less than a foot behind me the first half an hour when it started made a loud noise but then went to bubbling for about half an hour more noticeable on the shut off valve side
will have to cheak this but as the thermostatic valve and shut off valve would save to be swaped for feed and return can this make a differance ?
i can only explain it as bubbling for about the first 10 or 20mins
Is it still purging air when you bleed them ?
Thermostatic rad valve fitted?
it can cause this if wrong side
I'm thinking it's water "gurgling" rather than air, could be down to a fault valve or debris in the valve/pipework ?
specialy if they are not fitted on the flow. the older ones aren't suitable to be fitted on the return and the valve chatters .newer ones can be fitted on flow or returnThat's why I asked about the TRV, some can gargle and make a racket
