I have just bought a used ant-roll bar and it has some surface rust. I would prefer to clean and paint it before fitting, but am unsure whether or not blasting would cause any problems.
What are you going to paint it with? I have previously used hammerite and they look just as bad now as before I cleaned them although I suppose it is 6 or so years ago
I just used a wire brush in the angle grinder to clean them mainly because I didn't have access to a blast cabinet back then
I've gotten a good few of anti roll bars sandblasted and never had any issues. I normally just stick them in a vice and just use a wire wheel in the grinder though.
Thanks for the help - I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to interfere with the properties of the steel.
I'll be cleaning it up and storing it until needed. The car is fitted with unobtainable self-levelling dampers, but when these fail conventional ones need the ARB.
You will be fine blasting them it won't get it hot enough or hit it hard enough to effect the hardness. Only reason I normally wire wheel them is because they don't fit in the blast cabinet
i had this conversation with someone just the other day and he said grit blasting would be fine but shot blasting (with steel beads) is a no no as it work hardens the surface that can cause springs and anti roll bars to snap.
