blast media for rust spot removal -hobby use

i have a small spot blaster with the collection bag , im just a diy /hobby user doing the odd spot of rust on car panels once in a blue moon

not fussed if it leaves a rough finish , just want fast rust removal

what sort of media should i be looking at , does all grades go through the cheapie guns the same ?

When I need some I looked at the MM price for a bucket (bit pricy!) So went to a company that hires blast kit and got to sacks for the price of one bucket !
Its a consumable for the hire shops so they sell it.
Think it was Brandon tool hire if I recall

Crushed glass is probably the cheapest.

Dunno how well it works in a spot blaster though.

Just tried looking at Brandons web site....
Geess hope they did not pay a lot for that set up!
Could not find Grit, shot or sand blasting listed at all never mind consumables.
Worth poping into store
Think when I got some (a while back) MM wanted £26 ish for a bucket bot £30 ish for a 25kg sack at Brandon.

You will need a fairly fine grit, course grits tens to block up those small blasters and won't go through them.

I just use Kiln dried sand from the builders merch......very cheap and effective....
I always save some used sand for finer jobs.....

Try abrasive suppliers. I bought a bag of recycled grit made from crushed grinding wheels quite cheaply.

If using sand please ensure you use a decent breathing air mask. Silicosis is an unpleasant disease.

I have a small spot blaster like the one you mentioned. I posted my first use of it HERE on the forum. I used the sample media that came with it, and I can't recall what it was, but since then I've used it several times with both garnet and glass bead media, with good results. Glass beads are less aggressive than garnet, but tend to produce a smoother surface. You could also coal slag, which is cheap and works pretty well for rust removal. You could use aluminum oxide, which is very hard, but it might wear out your nozzles faster than other media. I think that garnet is a decent general-purpose media. It's fairly durable, reasonably hard, pretty good at rust removal, and doesn't create as much dust as glass beads (but whatever you use, you should still use appropriate personal protective gear).

thats what i allways use, scangrit immingham now most are using crushed glass . also use kiln dried in cabinet with a good 4 inch woodchip extracta ducted outside it can pull more air out than a 28cfm comp can push in

For 2k paint I use abek1 type filters on a full face mask - but thats a gas and in spot blasting we're presumably talking about particulates? So I'm thinking 3m type P3 filters? For garnet or glass probably, not sand

Getting a bit off topic but if the 2K paint contains isocyanates then an ABEK1 filter isn't up to the job.

Think it was medium grit. Same as the MM black grit. That's as much as I can recall. Think it was the only one they did at the time.

Someone may have read your post here and thought they were prodected from isocyanates with an ABEK1 filter when they are not, a new topic wouldn't help that person and it was correct add my comment here in response to yours.
