Blast cabinet , nearly there.

Hi, further to my blast cabinet saga, I now have the cabinet and a dust extractor. The cabinet has a 63mm o/d outlet with cone filter, the extractor has a 100mm hose, if I make/source an adaptor 63mm to 100mm will it increase the suction too much and pull out some abrasive with dust or would I be better fitting a 100mm outlet with a fine mesh screen to the cabinet?.

heres my filter on cabinet . its an oldbase of a gas bottle bolted on . the filter is a fine mesh bougt from harware shop for 3 quid its a cover for over a frying pan . it has a metal rim and did have a handle but i cut that off and it fits perfect into the rim all the dust is sucked out fast and the good heavier media drops to ther bottom. the outlet bolted on is just a cheap plastic fan grille to convert to the 100mm flexiduct to the extracta then out of the garage door . u will find theres not a lot of mess from the out pipe .so wether u filter or not is up 2 u. try it 1st and come to your own conclusion

Thats fine, but getting back to my question will the suction be too great keeping the 63mm o/d outlet to 100mm hose?.

it would be best keeping the pipe size at 100mm through out as it will restrict the flow of the extracta and put more load on the motor

I would keep to the larger diameter (100mm) for a dust extractor. Reducing diameter will increase the air velocity at the outlet and tend to suck out more grit particles, depending on your filter, it'll either clog quickly or pass the grit down the extractor pipe.

Depending how good your extractor is you may find you need to reduce it's suction by spoiling it's seal to the outside of the cabinet or using a t-piece with a gate valve.

Not sure if this will be of any help....
I made a blast cabinet years ago.... and I found it misted up all too quick, so I experimented with different ways of extracting the dust.... only to come up with using a fan to feed air in, then duct the dirty air outside of my garage with a plastic tube (3 inches).
This way you don't have all the gritty dust going over your extractor fan, which would keep failing...

it will work but it also pressurises the the cabinet along with the presure from the blast hose and gives bad vision. better to suck out more cfm of air in cabinet than the blast gun can deliver giving a slight vacuum and clearer vision

I've opened up the exit hole to 100mm, fitted a flanged spigot, a 90 bend then a volume control damper befor the flexible hose., which could be handy.:-
