Black oxide primer

Just after opinion on this paint as Ive run out of black Zinc oxide primer and this seems alot cheaper than my local paint supplier normally £50+ but this is £22 but the supplier seems legit

Well, 'red oxide' primers are around, but that description now only tells the colour of the paint and nothing else. The days when red oxide meant lead oxide are over. What does "black oxide" tell you??? I note the ad also mentions their "ZP" primers (zinc phosphate) - I am huge fan of zinc phosphate .

Zinc Phosphate primer is what I want ideally but this is vague as to whats in it

says 'We also have brushable ZP primers which are designed for priming under our brushable enamels'

does that mean this is the sprayable version ?

Surely if it were Zinc Phosphate it would say so ? The fact that it doesn't tells me its just ordinary primer.

I always likde Zinc Chromate, but nanny state dictats don't allow it now. Like most other things that actually worked.

It seems to be quite common that people sell paint but don't tell you what you need to know in their ads. If you search for their safety data sheets, those will usually tell you, but it really should not be necessary. Similarly, zinc phosphate paints traditionally have contained up to 5% zinc phosphate but some are now adding up to 10%, but you have to work hard to find out who does what.

That makes no sense. Surely any particular paint must have a "recipe" to make it what it is.

Perhaps they should supply Xylene and ZP separately, so you can add to suit your taste ?

Like potato crisps used to be, with the little pack of salt.

I think the problem here is that companies are legally obliged to supply info for the safety data sheets, but they don't want to give away info which could help their competitors, so the compromise is what you see above.

The question is, can you find any data that tells you how the rust resisting properties of a ZP primer change with the ZP content; I've never seen such data. Intuitively, you might think that more ZP gives more corrosion resistance, but maybe there are unwanted "side effects" to adding more ZP?

Until recently, I always used ZP primer from Johnstones which has up to 5% ZP and was very happy indeed with that. However, their minimum quantity is 5L, which is more than I need in say a 2 year period, so I've gone to another brand which is in the 1-10% range and also offers a 1L can.
Using old (and opened) paint is a questionable practice.
