Tried the B&D one, rubbish (red & black new one) seized after 15 mins of fairly light use. Tried to strip it down, but the motor ass with the drive drum is one unit. Spare cost £35 + p&p. It was actually the fan that blows the dust that had fused to the housing. It really is a hobby tool.

I used it to sand out all the casting marks in the cylinder head, that is only 1 light coat of aerosol primer to stop it flash rusting.

Aluminium doesn't rust.

I bet I have 40 cylinder heads in my shop, not one is iron!

Back to the topic, I personally think for 99% of jobs theres usually a better tool. I have one, but use the grinder with a flap wheel, die grinder, or good old file before I pick it up.

You don't find many ally heads on Cadillac motors

Just Bought one of THESE I have used them for years on and off, and only ever Makita ones, as long as you don't expect to be able to do everything with them, ie. chamfering 1" plate for butt's then you will be fine.

We have a couple of B&D powerfiles at work, the belts seem to come off very easily. Most of our welders prefer the air operated ones.

You are probably getting 457mm belts.B&D revised the length to 451mm to avoid this problem which is due to stretching.

Has anyone used or owned a powerfile.want it to linish welds for nice decorative items.do they do the job?what grit is best for steelwork?etc.....Would appreciate some help and advise before i purchase one.

If you look on ebay you can get Aluminium Oxide belts 40g-400g or Zirconia which are great for steel in 40g-120g.Go for the 451mm length rather than 457mm as they track better.

I got fed up with cheapo (Screwfix) belts coming apart at the glue join, so now buy Bosch about 2" wide ones and attack them with a pair of scissors to get about the right width for the power file. Works out about the same price per belt, but at least I can use all the grit before they fall apart.

I always thought they were a bit of a gimmic but now I've got one I wish I'd bought one ages ago. Its had some stick, running for hours at a time using 40 grit, cleaning the Disco rear chassis. Get my belts from a forum member ^ and they last very well too.

Dug my B+D version out yesterday to clean up some rebates in a piece of oak.
Belt stayed on but the motor struggled sounded and felt feeble. Might seem so weak because I have got used to using pro quality tools.

My B&D get used for fairly light DIY car stuff and has held up ok

However this evolution one @ screwfix seems quite good for the money (adjustable head angle is handy)

It was for a friend of mine, he was so chuffed with it he said he's going to put it in a display case. It is very comfortable to hold, the top profile probably shows better shape. The wood is called Partridge wood as the grain looks just like Partridge feathers.

I certainly am on BB, it's the only place to go if you potter about with knives. I wish I had the know how to do Damascus WCW, these were bought as blanks from a gun show at Newark by a friend and I handled us one each. Mine is done in African Blackwood and I'm in the process of making a sheath for it, well it just needs dye to finish it really.

Makes me think there will be some expert on the Antiques Roadshow in a 100yrs time expounding the virtues of Damascus steel and the particularly fine Partridge wood handle
