Black ( as in the colour )

Strange question I know but is Black just Black.

I know the difference between Matt, Satin & Gloss but what is the difference between Jet Black, Diamond Black ( any other Black's )

I know with White I can see the difference and like Frozen White above all other White's as it seems to have a slight Ice Blue tint and in certain lights the Blue stands out like a Pearl. BUT with Black's I am struggling to see much of a difference.

No, it never is. I have a Harley painted in Purple. Then 15 coats of clear with a hint of Purple as well. To glance it looks Black, but then....more than purple

Even many years ago when paint was 'simpler' there was many variants of black and if you had half a dozen differentmakes of cars parked next to each other in their own blacks they all looked the same... but if you patched one with some black from another maker you could tell the difference.

yes they vary a bit , stood next to each other there will be black , browny black and a blue ish looking one

on thier own they all just look black

While Google'ing and looking round online I noticed HOK do a few variants of Black but they do proper Black, as in just Black. Being HOK paint will it be a Pearl Black or something like that, would it look nicer than other Blacks.

In the next few months I'm spraying my RD tank & panels, Black with N2 red decals ( Speed Blocks ) Original colour is two tone Plain Black with Graphite/Gunmetal metallic, BUT I'm going all Black with the paint. Going to go with what is off the shelf available from the supplier but want a nice Black, something Glossy, Mirror, Glass, deep Black.

Black paint, surprisingly is very colorful as there are many different colors added blues reds etc, manufactures have there own recipies hence all the varients available.
A good example of these color is if you take out the inside of a black felt tip pen and place it on a damp tissue, the capilary action draws the different colored dyes out to form a rainbow effect

Just spotted this on ebay, 1L Pearl Basecoat Black. Would work out about £25'ish, is it worth a punt?

There are loads of Black pearls, metallics & Mica's out there, just pick one, no mention of make in that ad, I would only use a good name product.

Cheers, think I may just (KISS) Keep it Simple Stupid.

Probably just go with a Jet Black from someone reputable and seems to be most popular, it's going to be my first job in COB so keeping it as simple as possible, leave out anything metallic just in'case I need to give a light flattening before Clear coat. I'm quite confident after my previous results in Celly BUT do not want to do Celly again.

Just need this weather to get a fair bit warmer & dryer before I can spray.

You don't flat basecoat.

What happens if you got a little Orange peal in the Basecoat, thought only Pearl or Metallics were the only one's not to flatten as they would need another coat after done, or just apply a few more coats of clear and flatten the clear down?

Little lost on that one, sprayed Celly fine but will be first time touching COB so want to get it right from the off. As much advice as possible

you dont get orange peel in base coat its too thin and you dont apply it heavily, just mist it on you are not going for a shine so just mist it on to cover properly

If your getting peel in basecoat your putting it on too heavy, basecoat is quite thin.

A straight Jet Black code that should work for all companies including vehicle refinish and Industrial is RAL 9005. This is a European standard and is called Jet Black. Any factors should be able to knowck this up for you in Basecoat if that is what you are after and as it is basically just Black tint there shouldn't be any problem with re-ordering and getting the correct colour if you need more.
