Black and decker valve grinder

My B&D has a valve tipping attachment, the grinder in the picture above is missing the stone but you can just see the screw that holds the tipping attachment to the machine above the handle to the right.

YES BOB!! you are right! that is what the other end of the spindle is used for, forgot about that, mine is missing, anyone got a picture of one?

Hi all !

I'm going to have a look (on Saturday 6th) at a Black Decker valve refaced type FE like @hermetic has.
It might have the valve stem refacer unit but not clear on the advertisement pictures.
No cooling unit.
Anything special to look for ?

I prepared a 9mm/11mm concentric rod for concentricity check (my valves are 9mm stem).
I'll bring a dial indictor and its magnetic rest.

Does anybody has the manual (in PDF version is the best) ?

The seller also has a Wolf valve refacer VR5 but I'm less interested (even it has the cooling unit).

The flat drive belts are getting thin on the ground, I think one of the lads on here uses an upside down toothed timing belt on his. There wouldn't be much need for a user manual, its quite a simple machine to work with.

Mine came without the tipping attachment, which is very useful.

It was very easy to cobble something together that did the job, my Wolf would have had the tipping attachment so all I needed to do was add
a bar and swiveling vblock.

I also knocked up a rocker pad dressing attachment, I have no idea if one was available. Another pretty simple thing and very usefull.

You also need a seat grinder.

Got an FE unit here, and very useful it has been, over the years.
It's surprising how far out even new valves can be, but a lick over on the FE soon sorts them out.
With the stem-dressing arrangement, a bit of seat wear can be compensated for, and decent contact angles restored....

The stem tipping tool is also handy for resetting valve clearance on OHC engines, stoning a valve/seat will drop a valve in the head leaving a tight tappet, careful measuring and tipping the valve stem can bring that back without the need for new shims.

Originally intended for clearance setting on Ford Model T valves, I believe.
As for the drive belt to the wheelhead, I sourced and installed a very thin but fairly wide woven flat belt that is miles better than the multiple polycord horror that I'd been obliged to use.
There's a lot of incredibly useful stuff from that era still out there, but a lot of it is over in the US.
My Sturtevant valve spring pressure tester came that way, and very informative it has been....
One test is worth a thousand opinions....

When I was an apprentice we had an engine reconditioning line, the Cylinder head section had one of these, it did a great job of my Car cylinder head, you just threw it on the line and it would come out the other end like new

Pretty sure that the flat belt was a Dynaflex, made in Italy.
Something like that, anyway.

As it happens I’ve just acquired one of these, not lugged it out the car yet as it nearly did me in lifting it in but will get some pictures. Unsure whether to keep it or not

I think lathes.co.uk do the flat belts! if you have valves to grind you cannot beat these machines, a quick touch up and lap provides a much better seat than hours of grinding!

Very little play, the collet looks in good shape even if limited to 31/64" (which is enough for me).
Now sourcing compatible stones in the USA.
I have the stem surfacer.
I miss the diamant holder (not a big deal to make).
I also found lot of pictures on the net, even the rocker support could be done if needed.
Replacement flat belt available from italian Megadyne company but also another model found in France, even if mine are still OK.
Main shaft flat belt is actually a timing belt @ 180°. It makes the job, so why not ?

I wonder if lubricating oil type is mentioned (machine labels say "contact Black Decker for appropriate oil" ... very helpful).
I'm thinking to try light engine oil like 5W30 or 0W30, the BD lube system is "lost oil" principle for spindle bearings, and for the valve "tailstock" (I think the shaft runs directly on the cast).

I miss the cooling system (2 fixing screws still there), the valve stone protection plate (hold by 3 screws) and the "sink" in front of the valve stone.
Nothing impossible to rebuild.

I paid this one 150 Euros.
Similar French valve grinder (maker name DEWET) are around 400 Euros and I had to drive hundreds of kilometres from Belgium.

@8ob I see that you still have original Black Decker stone(s). Are there any grit/components informations on it ?

I discussed a little with the seller some time ago.

Be aware that the BD grinder of the seller is not exactly the same FE version as the one of @hermetic and myself.
It goes up to 17.5mm stem and ours up to 5/8" (16mm) stem.
I measured my valve side belts at 483 mm or or 19" !!!

Hello guys !

@hermetic do you remember the bearings dimensions of the motors ?

I opened the small pump inline with the main motor, it was seized and the flat coupling was broken.
It's apart now,. Nothing impossible to repair, just a modern oil lip seal to find (I'm wondering about the bronze shaft wear with the seal lip ....).
And the tank to re-create.

But ... I would replace the bearings as well to restart on a good base, and having them in front of me would speed up disass'y and rebuild process.

Gosnays in Romford can supply a lot of stones for those and suchlike machines, as they are UK agents for Goodson Tools ....
