I’ve got an ancient corded electric chainsaw it has never failed to start

Cuts just as well as a petrol saw

It is only for chopping logs in the shed though

Electric ones have the torque advantage.

In the 60s or so Stihl made a 3-phase chainsaw. Never used one but supposedly you can't slow them down for anything. Put a 36" bar on, bury it and it just rips through.

+ 1 on checking the fuel hoses sometimes it’s not obvious if there’s a slight leak, there shouldn’t be any air bubbles in the fuel hose.
I must have been lucky when I bought my cheap Chinese chainsaw, think I paid £75 for it, 50cc and 20 inch bar, apart from putting a better bar and chain on it, 7 years on its still going strong and it’s cut a lot of wood over the years.

Been told to avoid the cheapest Chinese carbs, middle of the price range are the ones to go for when it comes to Chinese carbs. I haven’t tried one yet, still happy cleaning and rebuilding OEM ones

I am not out in the woods daily - I am just producing fire wood and trimming trees.


But the best find I had for triming trees a few years ago was "silky saws". No really - today I have been using one - trimmed the "driveway" to my car repair workshop - no step ladders or climbing trees - been taking limbs off at 3-4mtrs off the floor with a "silky saw"....

Silkys are great saws. When i was dabbling in tree surgery i used mine all day. Surprising how much you can cut with one. Even 2-3" limbs are dealt with quickly.

Do miss using my saws. They're all shelf queens now.

I’ll third how good Silky saws are. Mine get used fairly often, brashing, felling trees and cutting up windblow. They stay sharp for ages.

I only have 3 silkys, but I nearly killed someone for using one, they was about to try and cut a nasty sleeper with it... NO not my silky you dont

Replace with an M-Tronic/Autotune saw and run it only on pre-mixed alkylate fuel. No carb tuning, no fuel degradation.

Got two 362cm`s here that are messing about, I have done all the obvious which has swallowed up some time and I am now having to send them away. Wont be buying any more of them.

Replace fuel pipe, impulse hose and clean the carb and fit a overhaul kit(or buy a carb) if you keep trying to run it when its running weak you could have the piston pick up, then it would be cheaper to buy new. Had one of my saws playing up, did all the usual things but in the end it was a carb fault, replaced the carb but it was to late and the piston had already picked up.

Honey Bros will strip them then say they're not fixable and sell you new ones. That's what they did when i was at that firm in Heathrow.

I bought four of them and two have failed, HB dont know enough about them so I was thinking of throwing them at the receptionist at Stihl HQ in Camberley next I am passing.

That’s what I’ve been doing wrong all these years!

Some good answers and thoughts - thanks. I managed to find an hour today to strip and clean the walbro carb on the screwfix (mountfield actually) saw. Had to make a tool to remove the mixture screws. It started an I got it running quite well. Need to sharpen it so I can get some load on it to set the high range mixture. Maybe then it will be ok...
The Stihl I've left for another day.
