Bit of rust repair on my vectra

Just thought I would sling up a couple of pics from a while ago when I repaired a rusty section of chassis rail on my car

There was lamination where one section is sat against another, this is after prying it a little with a lever

Cut away a section of the overlapping piece

Then cut out the next section

Made a new section

Beginning to weld it in




Made a new section for the next part (this took a few hours to hand make from 2mm)


Working against gravity


That was it for the drivers side, this is the passenger side - same script

Making awkward shaped repair pieces is more challenging than the welding - good work.

I had to make a new mount for a tie rod on the rear axle of a shogun. It was a pain, particularly as I don't have a ramp. I must have crawled underneath that car fifty times.

I've crawled under my fair share of them myself. I find the wosrt bit when welding is the spatter, I end up looking like an arab, but wearing leather not cloth.

Yours looks like an ST, it will have more rust than that!

He has done a brilliant job, I've never dared pry any of my B's there, too scared of what would happen.

Yeah you probably wouldn't like the price he quoted anyway if he put a decent hourly rate on it.

Alternatively it's all the prep that takes the time. If cut out all the bad stuff and fabricated the repair bits ready to go on you could get someone to weld them on.
